Two Century caps with over 10 years in MI salt and sun.

I have had good luck with the Century brand. I find that the flip up side windows makes the cap much easier to live with. I have an aux fuel tank in my dodge and this feature allows fueling without crawling in the bed. I also made a shelve out of plywood that sits on the top of the bed side rails. I now have a handy place to slide my suitcase or other travel items that I need to have quick access to and do not want in the cab.

The model I have bought also has a wood insert molded into the top to give you a place to mount a set of Yakama or other brand roof rack system. This can be handy for hauling your canoe, xmas tree, ladder, etc. This can also be a mounting location for your air horns, off road lights, or antennas.

I have found that the color match is on the money when new and will look the same as your truck paint after 10 years of sitting outside.

I did have to replace two of the locking side latches after about 5 years on my chevy pu. The tumblers in the locks rusted up due to me not using them. I now try to lock/unlock each of the six locks on a weekly basis and have had no trouble. A squirt of dry slide once a month does't hurt.

No matter what brand you pick I would suggest you hold out for side windows that open by being hinged on the top and swings out to open. If not, you will think of this comment everytime you crawl into the box chasing something that rolled to the front of the box. :)

I had an A. R. E. cap on my other truck, if I was to buy a new one it would probably be a Century, It is the only company I have seen that fits the front of the bed properly in its design,, The front of the bed have a long curve to match the cab , only Century matches this curve. The other have potential leak areas if not very carefully installing, plus Century 's prices seem to be better, no appearant differences in quality, same warranty ,etc.

I have an A. R. E. on my '03 & like it.

Regarding pricing, I shopped, here in Phoenix, & the Tucson, AZ. & Prescott, AZ. stores. There was about a $300. 00 difference. Prescott offered the cheapest price & I chose them. Tucson offered to meet or beat the lowest price but, wouldn't give me a price over the phone. The shells from the Phoenix store must have been "Gold Plated", however I saw no difference. They must have been planning on the same "Carribean cruise". They would not budge on their price, either.

With an auxillary fuel tank, the Win-door (flip-up, side-opening window) is outstanding. Well worth the extra money.

Raider on second genner,i had a Leer on my 98 Dodge gasser, not impressed, leaks, mouldings had to be resealed etc, high cost. One of the best mods ever is to get the fold down front window as another member said-----this makes cleaning the back-cab window a breeze. I'll never go without that option again, roof rack is another nice option as well and outdoor carpet for the inside. I never would of thought of getting these items before but they had a "special" at the autoshow, all of these extras were thrown in for the same price,if i waited i would of got their base shell for the same money. LATER DW:):):)

I have an A. R. E. Z Series, I'm very happy with it. Three out of the last four of my Ram's have had A. R. E. , they have performed perfectly!

Bugracing: this one was $1,850 two years ago.

Had a Century on my '99 and now a A. R. E on my '04. 5. Both are cab high units with the cab to cap boot seal. The Century did not hold up well and required quite a bit of repair. . replacing both full side windows, refastening the rear window frame multiple times and stress cracks by the front 2 corners. So far, the A. R. E. has been OK but not problem free. The side window on one side came loose, slid down and damaged the cap paint which the dealer refused to fix. Also the rubber seal for the rear window has worn through and requires replacement. I have not been pleased with either dealer. Getting these issues resolved have been a lot of work.

Guys,

Many thanks for your feedback.

I like the style of both the Leer and the A. R. E. , although the Snugtop Topgun is still my favorite. Sadly, those are not available in MI and I am not driving 500+ miles to western MO to get one.

Based on what you guys are saying about the pricing, it looks like it is pretty much all over the board without any consistency.

One of my local Leer dealers wants $1529 + $69 for the install for the 100XL. The local A. R. E. dealer wants $1699 + $79 for the install. These are all custom orders without any option on the caps.

The only thing I have going for myself here is that our economy is pretty soft and sales for these "want" items are not hot..... so negotiation will happen if they want to see $$$'s.

Save Some $$$

I like the Leer and the ARE becuase they have the flush windows. I went with a Glasstight becasue it does all I want it to and was around $900 installed in 2004. I am sure this cap is more costly now, but I doubt it is $3k. The Glasstight doesn't have flush windows, but they do slide and have screens.

It doesn't rain much in Phoenix, but when it does, it comes down. I do get a little leakage from the tailgate, but not enough to be a big problem.

Personally I passed on the flip up side windows. Originally I wanted them, but being 5'6", I couldn't reach in with out standing on the tire anyway. My solution is a hook on the end of a broom handle. I can pull pretty much anything out of the bed I need, except for the 2nd spare tire strapped to the front of the bed :D.
