Is time to start with my air system. I now have enough fuel to produce 400 hp and still running the little stock turbo. Really runs great. Planning on eventualy installing a ATS manifold and bigger exhaust system. Sure would like to hear from everybody on your suggestions for a new turbo. I don't tow at all right now but will sometimes in the future. I'm sure I'm like everybody else and want a turbo that can do everything. I sure don't want too much lag or those powerstrokes might get by me and can't handle that. Guess I should call Piers and talk to him. I live close to Kurt so maybe I should talk to him also.

PDR hx40-16cm. Lags a little more than stock (in the amount of time from 0-10 psi. , after it reaches 10psi hang on !!!) yet

feels just as strong (if not stronger) in the low end. I have the ATS manifold ordered & should get it mid next week. Oo. (was supposed to have it before the PDR hx40 :( ) I'll post my results after I install it.

Well for now I am going with the Hx35 12cm with the Hx40 compressor wheel. Should give me realy quick spool up the draw back is back pressure on the top end. It cost me ALOT less than a PDR Hx40. I didn't want to loose quick spool up. Maybee I'll go for a bigger turbo in the future.

T. Baker, I am not sure if anyone knows what compressor Piers in running on his PDR HX35. If they do know they prolly have gag orders. Anyways this would be similar to a PDR HX35. Stock on the exhaust side and larger pinwheel on the compressor side. Air flow should be somewhere between a stock HX35 and an HX40. Spoolup will be quick and EGT's should drop about 100-150*.

Somthing to keep in mind: VARIABLE GEOMETRY TURBINE HOUSINGS AND BALL BEARINGS are comming soon in my opinion. So I am thinking why spend alot now on twins or special turbos.

I have a new found appreciation for the air side modifications. Do you want constant duty 400HP or only 5 seconds at a time? At the Calgary Diesel Stampede this past weekend, air side mods were extremely important in the 36*C (97*F) heat! We were running on a load-down style dyno which really "worked" the trucks for a few minutes. EGT's were the killer for all the guys with small turbos. A few guys had PDR HX-40's which performed very well in the heat. The 40's spooled very well and kept EGT's in check for the most part.

The other very interesting side to the equation was the air filter setup. There were stock air filter housings, BHAF's, Scotty 1, Scotty 2, AFE, ... . you name it, it was there. The Scotty 2's seemed to work very well at providing a relatively cool intake air supply. Piers and drawson had a good discussion on lowering intake air temp and the relationship that played on EGTs.

If you just want really short burst of power, a PDR 35-16 may work!?! If you want to stay in the go pedal for longer durations a PDR 40-16 (or other similar size of turbo from others) will definitely work.

The guys that were running the PDR 40-16 were very happy with the turbo. Most had migrated from 35-16 setups to the 40-16 with no appreciable difference in spool up. Much cooler EGT's and very strong mid and top end were the benefits of the 40 over the 35. If you want to play at 400 HP, I don't think you should fool around with small turbos. Get something with a 4" outlet so you can keep EGT's in check. You must then decide how much you want to spend which will decide which turbos are in the running. I do believe a PDR 40-16 is a good value in the bigger turbo category.

I would go with the Piers Super HX-40/16 and to top it off the Scotty Air 2.

I am very impressed with the set up I'm running right now towing my TT to Calgary and back with the #0 plate concerned me before I left. In fact I moved the plate back almost to the back for the trip up there and then adjusted it back to full rack travel in the campground up there. I desided to try it there for the trip home. I was able to run 75 with the cruise set over all but two hills all the way back to Utah with out going over 1250 EGTs. The outside temp where between 85-95 all the way back yesterday.

I am preparing a little research thing I have been doing for a while now having to do with intake air temp and EGTs. The discussion I had with the great one from up north about intake air temp was SUPER.

It was great to finially meet Piers!!!!!!

Layaway Plan

I wonder if Piers and Al have a layaway plan for their PDR HX35 with a 14cm or even a 16cm??????????????????????????????

Now that I have the clutch to handle some more ponies... I wonder if my better half would notice:-laf :-laf :-laf .

I have started to hate this place. . I was on my way to recovery and now I think that I have had a re-laps... .

The path is getting slippery!!!!!!! How does the HX40/16 perform from 1800-22-2400 rpms???? That is where I do all my towing is in that rpm range. The only time that I see the upper rpms range is when I am showing off a little.

Rick

Rick, the 40-16 "hits" real hard at about 1800RPM. Having said that, are you planning any further fuel mods down the road? If not, then a PDR 35-16 would be perfect for you. You could slide the 11 plate almost full forward (~ 310 RWHP) and run any hill without EGT problems. In fact, with the Scotty Air II you have, you may even get away with running the PDR35 with your 12 housing?!? This is a very smart way to spend your money and you will get to keep your Pacbrake. The 40 is very nice but not required at your fueling level.

Marc

As far as needing to add fuel... . I don't. It pulls our 9k 5erjust fine. Adding more air to drop the EGT's to widen the gap below the 1250 number while pulling hills, do I want to YES. . is it needed, not when I use my right foot.

With the Scotty II, I see the same EGT's as I did with the stock plate and the Scotty I.

I dont think it is the need for hp/torque... its just wanting to enhance what I have. If it calls for a quicker spooling turbo with a bigger housing to drop the temp lower. . I will do it. But just adding the hp/torque for towing, right now its not needed.....
