I have a problem with persistent smoke at start up. In good health the truck since new would make a small black puff at start up. now no mater what it puffs white gray and has an oily smell. I have since changed oil to amsoil and countless other things to try and correct the problem. whould it be a drip at the turbo or a valve seal leak ? any comments

no codes it seams more like some sort of oil smoke than the smoke you get with not enough advance. But then thats why I asked.

The last change I made was to oring the head. The guy that did it said it was using oil before that and it was most likely due to the HG being partialy blown for a while before it really pucked. while the head was off I sent the turbo to II to be upgraded to super phat shaft not sure if they put a bad seal in it. When the head whent back on it got a . 20 over marine gasket for the extra valve clearance, not sure if the lower compression has any bering on the smoke at startup.

not sure what not enough compression or timing smoke smells like but I can say that I figured the smoke whould be reduced or smell diffrent by changing to amsoil because I had heard that it WOULD not burn. As in pour small amounts in your fuel to dispose of it and it will just run out the tail pipe. so that it why I change to it to see if there was a noticable change. The oil I used is the 15-40 not the 5-40 3000 series might be that only the more pricey 5-40 don't burn.

hope this helps ...

rivercat if the turbo seal was bad you'd probably have quite a bit of blowby. Are you getting oil sprayed out the draft tube & coating things?

I would also suspect the . 020" head gasket because the 24-valve doesn't have real high compression to begin with (only 16. 3:1 versus 17. 5 for a 12-valve), and you lowered it quite a bit more with the HG (down to 15 something). Combine that with fairly big injectors and that's probably what's happening, poor combustion due to cool cylinder temps. Is it a haze or is it a cloud? I would've stuck with a stock thickness HG or no more than a . 010 unless you're ultimately going for a lot of HP (ie 600+). Contrary to what many believe you do not need a thicker head gasket after having the head milled, you can take a lot off on the order of . 030" before piston-to valve clearance may become a concern.

I don't know if we have valve seal. If we do it sounds as if you getting oil leaking through, while sitting for awhile. That would cause a little smoke at start up.

This happen to me and it turn out to be the exhaust valve Guides and seals.

Let it sit over night then in the after noon remove the exhaust manifold

from the head and you will see oil on the bottom in the exhaust ports of the head and the exhaust manifold.

I had the head replaced and white oily smoke is gone.

If you didn't notice I have a HO motor and it came at 17. 1: 1 compression as the HO runs diffrent piston from the Standard out put

I did the thicker HG on jetpilots recomendation he stated somewhere that he had seen alot of trucks running 28+ lbs of boost with marks on the pistons where valve contact was evident espesialy in the folks that pull of drag and spend allot of time around 3400

Also I notice in the colder weather The smoke lasts longer than 30 secs it smokes blue gray for 2-4 mins
