White painted RAM owners: Any paint problems to be aware of?

Thanks, TDR Staff

Driving, not dreaming! My new CTD RAM

Thin paint/2001 dually/Solid colors

I am looking for a new or used 2500 QC 4x4 CTD,

with a manual transmission. My preference is for white

paint, since it is so friggn hot here in Texas!

Any major problems to be aware of? I know some

owners have reported stains from spilling diesel

on the paint.

Thanks!

Chris

*Currently without a Cummins powered RAM :(

My new Ram is white, in some places it looks more like vanilla. There are small black spots on the paint under the clear coat. Also look for patches of missing clear coat. I have small section in the body panel fold between the fuel filler door and the rear tire. Some folks have reported small "rust" spots on the surface of the paint. Haven't seen any of those yet.

Chris, I have a white truck that was built at the Mexico plant, with a build date of 08/30/00. The paint on it is close to flawless.

A couple of years ago I bought a 99PSD, which I didn't inspect all that much when I picked it up. The paint and fit- finish was a joke. After being burned by Ford, I looked over my Dodge very closely when I picked it out(bought off the lot, long story) In my younger days I painted a few cars so I am pretty familiar with the painting process and Dodge did a good job on this one.

The paint seems fine, but i did notice a few of the rust spots showing up, but you have to look real close to see them.

In my second white Ram with no paint complaints. I drove the first one 127K and no problems, the 01 has 29K and no paint flaws I can see.

Chris, my '99 is white and the paint is good on it. Bought it used with 13K on it, and no mudflaps, so the rocker panels have a few chips knocked out. Other than that, it's held up well in the Texas sun and heat. Let us know what you get :) BTW, what part of Big Ol' Texas are ya from?

my white 2500 99 was cool-- no paint issues- my 01 did have a little problem my fault but I did have a little diesel stain problem at the filler-- I was getting a new bed anyway-- just wash off any diesel spillage off the side when you fill up---

Actually this is my biggest complaint about my 01 Ram 3500 (9500 Miles). The Tailpipe has permanently stained the lower fiberglass section of the rear Dually fender. When you look even closer both the dually fenders don't evenly match the rest of the truck. The little fuel door is bright white. :D I would imagine this has something to do with them being fiberglass although I've seen some pretty Vette's in my day. I've been putting off doing anything about it because I'm scared to let and local dealership mess with it.

Jarret! What's up, haven't seen you on here in a while! I was just in Gold Bar last weekend, passing through on a jaunt over teh Cascades. I thought you were selling your '01?

Man, sure is a nice area you live in... I'd like to get a place up there, near Skykomish. :D

Evan,

Well, one of these years I'm going to build another new house. When the perfect piece of property comes up I'll jump on it. Building a new house will require selling the Ram. In the mean time I just baby it and keep it looking new and try not to drive it on raining days. I know, I know perfect waste of a Ram! I hear that about twice a week. I really like this area as well. Skykomish is real nice in the winter since it get a lot of snow instead of the rain I get down here. Hwy2 traffic can be a challenge, but if you've spent any time up here you know that. :D How'd you do on the pass? Were you loaded? (The Truck I mean) :D With my 3500 pound 11. 5 Lance I go over Stevens in 6th without much trouble. The Ford 460/Powerstroke lovers I run with up here just shake their head in disbelief. HEHEHE

I haven't been posting on this site for a while because of the registration deal we just had to do. (Been to busy to mess with it)

I got another child on the way for September so I'm kind of running right now getting thing ready. YEA RIGHT!

So what should I do about my paint problem? I know your no stranger to "Lot Monkeys". You should tell your story again for the new folks on the web site..... I think we got our trucks about the same time, how many miles do you have? Take care...  GO MARINERS!!!!!

YEP..............

Jarret,

I was running unloaded on both trips last weekend. On Sunday I took a trip up & over Stevens to Wenatchee, and then back home via North Cascades Hwy. Great drive, lotsof good scenery. But here's the best part... I went over 3 passes: Stevens (4,000'), Washington (5,500'), and Rainy (4,800'). All have pretty steep grades, especially heading West on Hwy 20 up to Washington Pass. My mileage for this trip was an astounding 24. 4 MPG. I didn't baby it either. :D Only problem I encountered, was the thin air made my DD3/PE EZ combination run hot. No smoke, just high EGT's. Guess it's time for a turbine housing. :D One thing is for sure though--I gotta get my exhaust brake installation finished. WOuld have been nice to have that on the downgrades.

Main reason for my Cascade jaunt on Sunday was to check out the BNSF Cascade Sub. I dunno if I mentioned it before, but I am an avid railfan. All the more reason to find a place up in Skykomish, or the surrounding area. :D

One of these days, we'll have to meet up and have a bull session.

About your paint problem... May want to take it to a professional automotive paint shop, and have them do dome kind of high-heat finish on the rear quarter area where the exhaust is. Something with a tough, non-porous clear coat would be ideal.

As to the miles on my truck, I am at 48,500 in 14 months. :D Will be turning 50K real soon, within the next week or so. My guess, is by this time next year, I'll be near 100K. Monumental event! How many are on your odometer?

Not sure if you are interested or not, but a few of us are going up to BC for some diesel drags on Saturday. Interested?

Catch you later!

white is right. I have had 2 white ctd's made in ol Mexico and had perfect paint and fit and finish. I like alot of the colors. I chose white cause it seems to look clean longer.

Thanks for the replies, guys! I took the PLUNGE!!

Well, tonight I did it! I found the Cummins RAM

with the options and features that I wanted. It

is white, of course, 2500 Quad Cab short bed, 4x4,

ETC (235/460 Cummins), 5 speed, 3. 54 LSD, camper

group, towing group, travel convenience pkg. ,

radio controls on the steering wheel, lets see. .

what else. . no leather seats, AM/FM/CD/Cass, uh. .

the other standard stuff as well.

The best part: I got it for $2,000 below invoice!

AND they "We Owe" (threw in) the Linex spray in

liner, factory rear sliding window, and an alarm

system, all worth about $1000! They wanted to sell

it pretty bad huh? I'm stoked! Now to order a

set of AutoMeter pyro and boost gauges and an A

pillar mount, Genos' cup smoothie and a Dana 70

Mag Hy-tec rear end cover...

Oh yeah, it's a new 2001 with 4 wheel disk brakes!

See ya guys!

Chris,

I know what you mean about a white truck in Texas!!

We have our second white truck. A '97 3500CC auto and now a 00 3500QC 6 spd. I haven't had any problems with the paint--even spill diesel on the fender below the filler door.

I do keep my truck waxed and parked in a garage.

Bill

PS Hey, I grew up in your neck of the woods--on League Line Road between Conroe and Willis--back in the 50s--before Lake Conroe. Willis High School Class of '59!!

Bill, you probably wouldn't recognize the place!

Have you been out here lately? I'm sure you would

not recognize much! I've been here 3 years and it

has changed quite a bit. The traffic is not too

bad (yet) but between Conroe and Houston on I45 it

is common to get stuck in three different traffic

jams! :D

-Chris

Chris,

Congratulations on the new truck!!!

It's been several years. That whole country is changed--recognized very little. I didn't even recognize the old home place--drove right past it the first time!!

I'm sure it's like the McKinney/Frisco area--lived there 26 years and been gone now about 8 years and have to be careful not to get lost!!! :D

The area where we live now is, or was, out in the country. We can hear the backup horns on construction equipment beeping night and day. Amazing!!! Wonder where all the people are coming from... ... .

Congratulation Chris,

I also (see sign) have a 01 white (Love it).

You might want to check your axle... it should be a dana 80.

Frank

ftb87 is correct!

For some reason I thought only the 3500s got the

Dana 80. I stand corrected. That's cool though!

I see the 2500s with the auto transmission get the Dana

70, and the 2500 manual trans get a Dana 80. Darn,

I should of removed the Mag Hytec from my 3500

when I had the chance. . oh well. It would have been

a messy pain in the bu## changing back to the

stock cover on the other truck! :D
