Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) white smke start.

99 cummins. last week started having a good amount of white smoke on cold start and it misses for ablout 30sec its not cold out 70+ Deg my Q is where to start? a few weeks ago I ran some injector cleaner through. Is this just a bad batch of fuel or should I start thinking pump? she is up to a little over 153,000 mi on the clicker with the mods in the sig. thanks

With the problem clearing up so fast after starting, I'd start by checking and cleaning, or just outright replacing, the IAT (Intake Air Temp) sensor. They're relatively inexpensive.



If that doesn't stop it, you might want to try disconnecting or turning off your EDGE box just to rule that out.



With the miss you described, it's also possible you have a sticking or leaking injector. Does the miss sound consistent and specific like only one cylinder is missing, or is it more random?

Sounds like a sticking injector. White smoke = raw fuel. Especially with a startup miss. Sounds like the injector is dripping.

The miss is consistant it sounds the same as when it is real cold. it does that "gallop" thing. I was thinking inj myself but did not want to get tunnel vission. Thanks for the input.

Yah... definitely sounds like one injector might have a problem. If you could borrow a DRBIII scan tool (or have a Dodge dealer do it for you), you can selectively kill one injector at a time while this problem is occurring to quickly figure out which one is the offender. If you kill an injector and notice no big change in engine sound, that's likely the cylinder with the problem. Once you know which one is causing trouble, you can replace it with a rebuilt one... they're not too expensive if ordered online.

Check the codes. I had the same problem last week. I had Code P0236. Map sensor input to high or to low. If I cleared the code it would come right back after start up. I replaced the map sensor and it cleared up. It starts in the morning now with less smoke. If you have code P0236, you will have to order the part from cummins $48. Also the orginal part is a 32mm socket and the new one takes a 27mm socket.

Thanks for the help as always. I dont think that I can check the injectors fast enough the miss only happens for about 30 sec. I could check the codes however, I will start there. If it comes down to injectors then it will be expensive. I will have to go bigger with those and then w/ turbo you know how it is. Any turbo,inj suggestions for my combo?
