Greetings everyone, I'm new but have been reading the threads for awhile. Not much of a mechanic but I'm learning by trial and error. Finally got off the pot and signed up.

Now all of a sudden..... problems. The warranty is up and guess what... . I think its a time release thing... .

Anyway heres the story.....

Started about a month and a half ago. Rough running and white smoke. Starts fine. Sometimes kicks and chokes but "runs up". After its warmed up no more smoke but a little rough and a slight "knock". Like a fuel knock, not metallic... .

After suggestions from a back yard mechanic I trusted and a cummins parts man who would help we:

1. changed all 6 (six) injectors..... No help

2. changed the rubber fuel line behind the fuel filter (what a nightmare that was). Slight help but went back to same problem after 1 day.

3. changed the overflow return (pressure valve) on the pump... . No change to the problem.

4. adjusted the valves... . a little quieter but no change in problem... .

I have a new transfer pump I haven't installed yet... Thought I'd ask you'all first... ... Any help would be greatly appreciated... I am now just confused.

Welcome aboard!!

I'd check #2. Make sure the fuel line aint leaking. A small leak(one that aint hardly noticable) will make white smoke until the fuel fills the system.

what year model is your truck? if it is 94-95 something like that the problem is that you need to have your injectoin pump timing advanced to 15. 5-16 degrees. this should fix the problem. the hard part is finding a place to get it done cummins won't do it due to epa. I hope this helps

PKemp,

What have the tempatures been in your area? (59 degrees and below or hot?)

Just wondering if your intake heaters/ and corresponding components are working correctly. ( white smoke)

Only time I hear a knock is when something ( I presume a valve) inside the injector pump sticks. I then run injector cleaner or fuel conditioner thru the tank. This takes care of knock(tick).

Air Heaters

I was at the recent Big Truck Brothers Show in Louisville, Ky. I talked to the Phillips & Temro reps. They told me no matter how many times you turn on your heater, it will only heat up to 1100 degrees. Iwas concerned due to my starting problems that am.

My truck barely started & produced enough smoke to kill all the potential mosquitos breeding in Louisville.

How do you adjust pump timing ? Better yet, is there anyone around Chicago, Il. that can do it for me ?

My '94 was doing the white smoke thing and i got the timming set from SNAP-ON and found the timing had sliped to 10 or 11 deg. I set it up to 14 deg. and it runs so much better for it

Still smokin

Sorry! Its a 1995, 3500, auto, 160hp, CPL 1959. Am going to go thru the fuel lines here next... . How many are there? Should I check the tank and pickup tube?

Its been cool here, one day 40 the next day 60, back and forth. Confused weather, very humid.

Or...

Did you change the fuel filter lately? I'll assume you did with all the other work done.

How about a bad load of fuel or a change in the place you get it? I ran into this for the first time this winter. Got a bad load, added a bunch of cleaner/cold weather additive. Still acted up when cold several tankfuls later. Changing the filter finally cleared up the remainder. Last weekend at a chapter get together, I got more crappy fuel!  :{ Runs fine warm but when cold it misses and smokes.

still smokin

Back again! Yes I did change the fuel filter in the middle of all this and again at the end.

We're going to clean out the pre-filter screen, pull the tank and clean it, replace all rubber lines and the lift pump, check the tank pick-up tube, and check the fuel heater this weekend. I'll let ya'll know what happens... . In the mean time ya'll have a good Easter weekend... . and God Bless.....

If this doesn't do it we'll go to the next step... . Timming... I'm a little skeared of this one... .
