That’s a nice recap. Interesting that roads were best in Kentucky. Will you do a piece on this for the magazine? On the wheel bearing, were you expecting that? You had a whole loaded drum in spare. Did you service the bearings before you left? Suspicion? I’m just curious about this.

I replaced all four brakes, two drums with bearings, and the other two drums I reused with the bearings I had replaced about a year ago. I figured for a trip that long, as long as I had a good used drum with one year old bearings in it I might as well throw it in. I also had a set of old bearings and races packed with grease in a Zip-lock with me just in case. Not sure what happened to the bearing, it still had lots of grease, just all the rollers and race were ground up. I know it wasn't too tight, I always adjust them loose vs. tight. Perhaps I got a piece of dirt or something in the outer bearing when I did the brakes. In any case I was lucky we stopped for the night when we did and I smelled the brakes burning on that wheel when I went around to set the stabilizers. Also really lucky the spindle was not damaged very bad. I will pull it back off when the weather cools down a bit and see how everything looks.

I blame poor bearing quality. For decades our trucks’ rear axles were bulletproof. Not even using wrenches, the old timers used hammer and chisel to knock around the nuts, set the tang washer, and outer nut. Never a problem. Then around 2001, these Hyatt Chinese hub bearings started showing up on the Mack rears, and so did the road calls. Rear axle meltdowns became and still are a thing.

So Greg Whale has all the right connections with Chrysler, he shows up in a Hell Cat Red Eye! Insanely cool car. Me and the boy were drooling over it and Greg taps me on the shoulder and says get him in there and get a picture. Such a cool community here at TDR.
Greg if you see this, thank you. You made a young man's night.

I'm seeing it now, and glad it had desired effect. The story's already in but I didn't have a name associated with the event. We shall see if I got the story right.
