How do I tell when my torque converter "locks up"?

Well, the saga continues. . but alteast a solution is in site!! I have read where several of you have had the complete axle replaced in your trucks. . Mine is soon to be on the list ( Next week). At 2200 miles the truck had a rear end howl, They fixed ring, pinion, bearings etc. . now at 4500 miles, the howl has returned... and getting worse!! Went to dealer today because they had put 75-140 in the diff and DC reuires the 75-90. The service manager went with me on a test drive and validated my " Howl". . said it was the first one he had seen. . LOLOLOL I saw a tech outside the office and he told me a different story... he said that it should NOT be making that kind of noise, and as soon as they opened it back up... they would end up ordering me a new Axle. The manager wants to put the correct lube in it and fix the seal... (The seal is Weeping, not bad, at the front of the diff where the driveline connects. . pinion seal????) and see what happens. The tech has said that won't do anygood! And when they open er up, there will be abnorlal wear and they will end up replacing the axle...

From what I have read on here, when they replace the axle... all seems better. Also read on TDR where 10% of AAxles have been failing!! Just my luck, but it will be done!!!

Thank God for my Dana 80 - rest of truck doing well also, 25,000 miles/2 years, keeping my fingers crossed on LP and injection pump issues - none so far... ;) :D

Roperteacher, I've got 148K+ on my 03 now, and no pump problems nor rear end whine, everything is just fine. A friend that tows with me sometimes had an 04 duramax with 83K, and injentors went out, he traded for another 04, and at 14K they went out on it. He's waiting for new inj. now, I really feel sorry for him, so hang in there, it could be worse!!:) I have heard that if your out of warranty on the duramax, its $5000. 00 for new inj.

WOW!

With all the talk about rear end noise, vibration, poor fuel mileage, do I want to take delivery of an 04. 5 truck?

My '02 was flawless, 38,000 miles of trouble free driving. Sorry to hear of all the troubles you're having. I am hopefull they will be able to get to the bottom of your problem and fix it.

IMO this sort of thing is what happens when the Accountants make engineering decisions. The new rear ends were probably $100 cheaper, and D/C got visions of all the money they would save. Going with the low bidder ALWAYS bites people in the rear end.

They are replacing the ring and pinion in mine. Not sure how often this is the fix but if it starts to howl again I will be HOWLING for a replacement axle assembly.

So far my 03' has 31,000 plus miles, and I have had absolutely NO major problems at all! I did have the clutch disc replace for the noise issue when clutch was pushed in, but no problems with that since. It is a real JOY to drive!!

Roper,

You know my story but for those of you who don't I'll keep it short. The complete rear end replacement, on the truck that Chrysler now owns, fixed my truck for approx. 800 miles and the whine came back.

I'm glad the nightmare is over with the 03. I hope I'm not crazy for ordering a new one because it is scheduled to arrive on 5-28. A through test drive will be in order.

Time will tell with these AAMs,but it is encouraging to see 148000 on a truck with no problems.

Dont feel to bad though Ford and Chivy are having problems also,Ford has bought back quite a few Fords 6. 0s,I would rather take my chances with the Dodge,I have always been a Ford guy @ heart, but from what I see lately,I sure am glad to have a Dodge.

Also I dont think Dodge will put up for all this nonsence from AAM,just like they dropped Dana, could happen to AAM,so I think they will get it fixed.

Why on earth would you want to get rid of a nearly new truck when it is not doing anything wrong?

I just bought my "new" rig, a 98. 5 w/85k on it. Dealer had to do a few things to make it right before delivery, but it has been flawless since 12-24-03. Got 92,200 miles on it now.

I will comment though that my '98 12V I had before the DIVORCE had more guts. It pulled from 20 mph to 85 mph like there was no tomorrow. If I wanted to, it would stay in front of all the traffic on city streets or highway. Don't know what gears it had, but it was a fast one.

Ah, well, you probably didn't know Wayne owns controlling interest in Amsoil, so money is no object to him... ;) :D :p

"I think D/C only puts the whine in if you don't have the vibe"

Yeah - but the Monday morning first truck off the assembly line rates DC's 2fer special - both for the price of one... ;) :D

Gary, I think that was KD7GYJ that had 38K of trouble free driving, not Wayne. I don't know if Wayne owns controlling interest in Amsoil, but I'm sure he knows whar TP is supposed to be used for!!:p  :D

I saw Wayne's post, and thought that was the one referred to - and *I* know what TP is good for too, and we recycle the stuff outta the Frantz - it's slicker, but still works... ;) :D :p

Mines been replaced

Had mine replaced at 8600 miles. The reason was it was assembled wrong at teh factory and It ate the differential apart. I was just about to leave on a trip for colorado, and he said it would not have made it. I saw the diff, and I was shocked. Wish I had a camera. The reason I took it in, is my crusie control would not work. It would not find a constant speed, it would just hunt for speed. THe sensor in the diff. was covered in metal, so it wouldnt register. It works fine now, but there is a little howl when i am at a constant speed and not under load. I cant hear it at all now with the new exhaust.

Wife said,

Truck must go. So I sold it and the neighbors have been betting all year as to when I would get a replacement.

It was a good traveler, farm truck, jeep hauler, etc. HO with 6 speed.

Now I am paying $5K more and starting over.

I had mine replaced at 15,000 miles

no trouble since. I am at 21,000 now.

I hope I will make it past 30,000 with no trouble.

I agree - bean-counters making decisions for manufacturing rarely works in the long run. I am sure DC put a lot of thought into the change and there had to be money involved - of course they are in business to make money. They are not building these truck to make us happy, so money is first, sales is how they make money, customer satisfaction is how they sell, ******* off 10 percent (if that statistic is true) of CTD owners may not add up to losses to offset the money saved(if the ten percent don't buy DC again). I doubt they will do much about this. After all, there have been TSB's on the rear end yet, that I know of. All these rear ends have to do is make it 70K to make it past the factory warranty. What percentage of trucks will not do that - pretty low?

Of course, the ones that do go 100K and over may be whining the way until one day they destroy themselves and have to be totally replaced. The 1G and 2G had there problems that everyone talked about when they got into the 100k range - pumps would probably have to be replaced before you made it to 200K. But other than the pump, there was not much that was a sure replacement. Now on these 3G's, if I were looking at a used one, knowing what I know now, I would assume that the rear end is either going to start howling before I get to 200K, or may need total replacement - regardless of fluid changes intervals.

I know that if DC does not do something to correct these rear end problems, I will look at Ford next time and hopefully they will have the bugs worked out by then. Not saying I am sure I will buy one, but I will definetly look into it. I love the CTD, and am pleased with most other aspects of the truck ( of coarse I have nothing to compare to since I have not been in a chevy or ford). But it take more than an engine to make a dependable vehicle.

I think most people that own these trucks never pull anything over 5K and only do that once a month or so. Those people may never see a rear end problem. It would be neat have a poll to see how many members have had warranty work and for what - we could get some good statistics.

Does DC listen to or monitor this site? Or do we have no strength even though we have numbers?

I also agree - it seems that if you have the whine you don't have the vibration problems. Could lead somewhere???
