5th wheel/truck capability questions

ReTrax Bed Cover Parts 2500 RAM 6' 4" (SB)

I'm no spring chicken, but there are still some RV items I haven't used.

I've only owned and used B&W 5th wheel hitches. I learned recently of the locking method on the old 24K Reese hitches. Probably didn't get it straight, but the lever has to be moved to get it to lock the jaws and you have to do a test pull to verify. The lever position didn't tell you for sure it was locked. i know if my B&W jaws are closed around the pin its good to go, the lever always lines up with the safety pin holes. I've seen guys running around without the lever's safety pin installed, so it must be a fairly solid lock.

When you back in to the king pin with the newer Curt 5th wheel hitches, do the jaws automatically lock around the pin, lever moves to the closed/locked position?

Somethings you learn before you leave the homestead. Hitching and unhitching your rig is one of them in my book. I'd mark that one as a safety critical.

Good thing you never used a big truck. There plenty of ways those 5th wheels sooner or later won’t latch or unlatch. No training covers it. Far too many reasons why. Some mean something for safety, some not so much.

The rest of you crowing about someone else not knowing what you already do miss the point entirely.

Speaking of crowing.

Gary was talking about a guy that bought one camper and one truck and didn't care enough to understand one of the most basic yet critical tasks associated with both before hitting the road.

If said owner had incorrectly hitched his rig and made it 5 miles down the road before it decoupled, went across the yellow line and hit someone in your family I bet you'd feel a lot differently.

When we started out hauling RV's for a broker they had us demonstrate we could hook and unhook 5ers.

We couldn't. The fellow doing the testing couldn't. Brand new truck outfitted by their recommended outfitter with hitches etc.

One phone call later the broker had the outfitter warranting the brand new defective Curt 5er hitch.

Getting one uncoupled isn’t always easy. Plenty of valid reasons they can get stuck. You won’t know how to fix until then. Hopefully someone will be along without a know-it-all attitude.

Ive run into problems years down the line and never experienced them until then. Didn’t even hear of them. Get helped by some guy learnt it his first week. And I’ve known things since my first job a guy with thirty years didn’t.

Given that none of you test and correct trailer-brake only rig-stopping, plus 35-0 combined rig versus TV solo,

you’d better believe I dislike RVers like yourself running over 60-mph.
