...I must say that I would like to see what kind of mileage the new diesel will get in a crew cab, long bed 1/2 ton. That would make a sweet road rig for me on long trips. It would beat the heck out of a VW or other small diesel car as I could still carry something besides me and a suitcase.

The only way to get a long bed (8 ft) in the half ton is a base model regular cab, without the diesel.

Long box means getting stuck on a two track with no turnaround! A wide turning radius and real 4X4 limitations, off road.

My Junk is only what I need! Got an old '93 that I use to haul firewood and trash.
I'll keep that one until the wheels fall off or the State/local government regulations taxes it out from under me!
But I don't need a duplicate! Just an all weather light duty rig. Good fuel mileage and
wider use than a little Subaru Forester, which BTW, doesn't get much better mileage than the V-6 gas or Diesel.
Maybe a little more reliable, however?
Last week I drove over 600 miles, 400 Miles a week is average.

Im keeping an eye on the Chevy Colorado for 2015 coming out with a diesel, hope that Toyota and or Nissan will look at that as invasion of the midsize arena and come out with one also.

Yep, no long bed for the 1500 eco diesel crewcab kills it for me. Need to be able to put a quad in the bed with the tailgate up....

I'm keeping my 2011 Dually for camper duty and big trailer hauling but could use a more friendly ''daily driver'' like a 1500....ugh. For the money might end up with a 2500 6.4 Hemi CC long bed SLT. I've test drove a bunch of cars but I really am a truck guy....and cars are crazy spendy when you start wanting it as nice as my Laramie 2011 Ram 3500 dually.

Looks like the little Ram just got EPA certified for 20 city, 28 hwy and 23 combined.

Nick

So roughly 8 or so MPG across the board better than my current 1/2 ton. That's quite an increase and something I am really excited about.

That' no reason then!!! 2ond and 3rd package down fixes the problem of short beds in your case.

I don't think there are any CC-LB 1500's regardless of the engine.

I've seen those before but the quad is not the only reason for a long bed....firewood, barkdust, lumber, etc....

For me I wouldn't have anything but a long bed!! If I wanted a car with a large trunk (aka short bed) I would buy a large auto. I cant see where a couple of extra ft. of metal is going to make that much of a difference in anything, other than less room to haul things.

Posted this on another forum where they were arguing about fuel costs and comparing apples to oranges (Fiat to Ford).

Fuel prices based on the lowest available 2/26/2014 in the 48150 area per Gas Buddy
Reg $3.37
Mid $3.50 ** the Hemi V8 calls for mid grade gasoline
Diesel $4.19

Ram 1500 Laramie crew cab 4x4
V6 ------ max payload 1643 lbs --- max towing 7150 lbs --- epa mixed 19 mpg --- fuel 20k miles = $3,547
V8 ------ max payload 1266 lbs --- max towing 9900 lbs --- epa mixed 17 mpg --- fuel 20k miles = $4,117
Diesel --- max payload 1064 lbs --- max towing 8550 lbs --- epa mixed 22 mpg --- fuel 20k miles = $3,809 + DEF $43 to $112 + Additives $30 to $90 = $3,882 to $4,011 OUCH!

As of today, traveling 20,000 miles, the diesel costs $262 more for fuel than the V6 and $308 less than the V8.

The diesel fuel cost doesn't include def or winter additives, which could easily cut that $308 advantage in half.

EPA mpg numbers: https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bymake/Ram2014.shtml

DEF prices range from 2.70/gal at Loves truck stops to 6.99/gal in auto stores.
Additives figure best case: 6 months @ $20/300gal to worst case: year round @ $10/100gal

Forget the EPA numbers. The real-world FE numbers will favor the diesel by a wide margin.
I bet not. The new diesels are not like the older ones. And I REALLY think this engine will NOT last over 100,000 miles without a replacement and parts will be a PAIN to get. It is just too bad that the Italians decided that even tough Dodge has been working with Cummins for a long time we have to have an Italian motor. Any of you who know anything about Italian automobiles will know what I am talking about. They are made with a finite life span and are not made to last. I KNOW if I was looking at a 1/2 ton it would be either the American made Nissan ore Toyota with a Cummins. In fact, the ONLY reason I have stayed with Ram is because of the Cummins motor, and I WILL NOT buy another one if the Cummins was not an option.

Please redo this using the HWY mpg ratings....... 20,000 miles a year for most people would mean a lot of HWY miles. And we can argue all we want but the beginning sales numbers regarding orders are showing there is some demand for a 1500 deisel. Was just meeting with a farming client and friend yesterday and he is planning on getting one of the new Ram 1500 Diesels as soon as possible.
