Hey Gary, How are you Doing?. You got your new truck yet? Too Big eh, I'm 6'4" and 310lbs now. But When I was in Ronald Reagan's Navy, I was at 240lbs, And still too big to fit thru a 18" Scuttle while wearing a OBA. #ad
So they made me a Repair Locker leader. Too big to be a Hoseman for Firedrills.

the definition of "military" sometimes seems to vary for those of us in the "reserve" component, but ifn ya wanna count me--
19Apr1983-10Sep1991
USArmy Reserve with various MOS's
94B10--Food Service Specialist (cook) up to PFC---
then enrolled in Leadership Academy and changed MOS to 11B10---Infantry Rifleman
After graduating from Ldrshp Acdmy (now SGT E5) MOS was 11B2X (Infantry Drill Sergeant)(also trained as 11C--Infantry Mortarman never got Dragon or TOW)
Geographic move required a new MOS (same 95th Training Division, new Brigade)--hadta go to Artillery School--finally ETS'd as a 13B3X (Artillery Drill Sergeant, SSG pay grade E6)---all duty was CONUS --the phone didn't ring for Granada,Panama,Libya, or Persian Gulf-- I was lucky, lotsa guys weren't, even though almost all those went smoothly... rich

US Army '61-'64 Signal Corps (AKA flag wavers). After school at Ft. Monmonth I was stationed at the Lexington Signal Depot in the wilds of KY (should have got hazard duty pay for that!). I had an MOS where you worked in a building with a steel front door that looked like it was a bank vault (lots of fun to get open in the winter without setting off the thermite granade when it was full of ice!). There was an armed guard instead of a cute receptionist. My army career was a bit unusual. I was the first PFC (E3) to be assigned there since WWII. There were 18 GIs including me and 24 officers. The work force was several thousand civilians. The lowest rank on the post other than me was a staff sargeant (E6). Since they didn't have enuff officers to support the Officers Club all the enlisted were associate members, including me. I'll bet I was the only PFC in the army who was a member of an officers club. We all lived off post except for a few senior officers who had nice government homes on the base beside the golf course.

Two interesting things happened while I was there. The Kennedy - Kruschev stand off at sea. When that happened I was called up in the middle of the night and ordered to report in. There was a large truck being loaded at the dock of the building where I was working. I was co-driver of that thing to the Pentagon with a load of "stuff" from our building. A major rode shotgun with a 45 on his hip. There were a couple of carbines shoved under the seat for us drivers. Had no idea what was going on until we stopped for breakfast in Wheeling, WV and saw a newspaper. There were armed guards at the Pentagon. We stayed in the truck while it was unloaded and then were told to beat it. The other thing was that I was at work when we heard on the radio that Kennedy was shot. I got out as an E5 and was still the lowest ranked GI on the post. After that experience I have since refused to apply for or accept any job that required a clearance. Too much BS!

I was in the Air Force for 4 years. 1974-1978. I worked for NORAD... fun job, controlling dogfights with fighters and ocassionally bombers, as targets.

I enjoyed basic training, too. Not all of the orders you get, but the competition was great. Got my expert marksman ribbon there, using a POS M16.

Army National Guard - April 89 to April 97 - as an 11H - tow missile gunner.

I really wanted to go to Annapolis (Naval Military Academy). My dream was to fly F-14's off an aircraft carrier. But when my eyes started going bad my Junior year in high school, I was told I wouldn't be able to be a fighter pilot (could still fly cargo or helicoptors or be an aviator). Decided to check out the Infantry and had a local National Guard Infantry unit. I really enjoyed it, but I knew I wanted a family and being an infantryman was no way to raise a family for me.

Now married and have a son. #ad
My only regret is not just once getting to take-off from and land on an aircraft carrier. #ad

I was in the Navy from 62 to 66. I was a radioman on various service ships which meant all our equipment was WWII vintage. My 1st seaduty was on a ex-minesweeper turned into a survey ship homeported in Brooklyn NY. My 1st cruise was in the North Atlantic looking for the sunk nuclear sub the Thresher. Later, we went through a hurricane off Trinidad and took 57 degree rolls and solid water over the open bridge.
I was pretty good at morse code but it was just about obselete even then.

Joe G ...

I was never stationed on the left coast. But, I spent a considerable amout of time in Ilwaco, WA ( Cape Disappointment ) when we were testing the prototype replacement for our motor lifeboat. I have also made a gazillion trips to the bay area and Napa Valley!

Rammin On,

Did you even go into Humboldt Bay, Ft. Bragg, or Monterey? I was involved in rescuing some folks on a 80' yacht that sank one night in Sept. '81 off Pt. Sur. My fishing boat was the closest vessel so we picked them up. Nasty night with cold wind and chop. It had sank by the time we got there and the three of them were is a little rubber raft soaking wet and cold. We had the stove hot, a pot of soup on, blankets, and dry bunks ready for them so they were ok in a short time. Plenty scared! We hauled them back to Monterey. The Coast Guard had to guide us in to the bay since our radar had decided to quit and it got foggy. Quite a night. Later I found out that a lot of fishing boats were listening to that one.
