I hope this is appropriate, but I thought I'd share a recent bad experience with 4WheelParts, which is why I'll never do business with them again.

It started when I participated in the recent GP for the RS9000 shocks and in-cab control system. One of the rear shocks was defective -- the adjustment knob had no "1" position. You could turn it all the way down, but it would move back up to "2" by itself. Also, there were no instructions in the in-cab control box.

When I got home from my Colorado trip and traded my 96 4x2 truck on the 01 4x4, I needed new shocks for the front. I sold the almost-new fronts for a fair price and discovered that there was a local 4WheelParts retail store in Oakland.

I went down there to get the front shocks, and to have them swap the bad rear shock. After getting some lip about the rear shock, they reluctantly replaced it.

To get the new front shocks, they wanted me to drive 20 minutes south to their Union City warehouse, because they had none in stock in Oakland, despite my earlier phone call to them to check, and their insistance that they did.

I also purchased a set of their nerf bars while there, and they too were at the warehouse location in Union City.

By the time I was finished, I no longer had time to make it to Union City before I had to be in Rhonert Park to meet Nowell (HVAC) for the dyno session. I figured I'd either go by later in the afternoon, or call the store and ask 'em to have them brought up to the store from the warehouse for me to pick up the next day.

The dyno session ran longer than expected, so I went to Plan B and called 4WheelParts when I got home, about 4:30 that afternoon. The guy I spoke to sounded very helpful and assured me he'd have the parts delivered to the Oakland store and they'd be there by 10:30 the next morning.

So the next day, I went down there in my Camaro (I didn't feel like driving the truck that day). Much to my chagrin, the parts did NOT make it to the store, and were still in Union City, and it would take several hours to get them trucked up there. I reluctantly agreed to drive on down to pick them up. Before I left, I asked them specifically if the nerf bars would fit in my Camaro. They said it shouldn't be a problem. I know that nerf bars aren't quite as long as the truck cab, so I could drop the back seat and do some funky arranging, and get 'em in there.

I finally find the warehouse (very poor directions) and get the shocks. Then they bring out the nerf bars. These suckers were EIGHT FEET LONG or **** near. Apparently, they are the type that run between the wheel wells, not just cab-length. AND they were bolt-on (must drill holes) despite the literature saying otherwise. No way in **** would they fit in my car. So I refused them and took just the shocks. Then spent 20 minutes just trying to get back to the freeway in heavy traffic.

I get home and install the front shocks without much trouble. I install one rear shock, and then get ready to install the new one I'd picked up. Guess what? They hadn't given me the metal sleeves that go in the bushings of the shock, so I couldn't install it.

The next day after work, I stop by the Oakland store again. Guess what? They don't have the old shock anymore, nor the box the new one was in that they gave me, so there's no hardware. The kid didn't really seem concerned about it. At that point I was too pissed to even want to deal with them anymore, and left.

Then I emailed 4WheelParts.com and told them that briefly what happened (minus the rant that I'm posting here) and that I needed the metal sleeves, and instructions for the in-cab control kit. I gave them the phone number on my account that they always asked for, my city, state, and so on. Two days pass, and I get a reply from somebody there saying I still have to call in to Customer Service and he isn't sure he can help me anyway.

Now I'm borderline livid. I'm ready to remove the shocks and ram them up somebody's @$&% there.

Needless to say I'll have nothing to do with that place again.

Rob

Thanks a lot for sharing this. I also had an awful experience with that company and I will NEVER do business with them again. It also involved Rancho Shocks.
I would rather pay a little extra and get real service than pay less and get the kind of service they have.
My $. 00002 worth.

I also had problems with 4Wheel Parts Wholesalers. I ordered a set of Rancho upper & lower control arms. When It got here the box was ripped in half, bushings were missing ect. Box looked like it was sitting in the warehouse, probably in a puddle of water. Bottomline was product not close to being properly prepared for shipping. Returned them (I paid) and I still got charged a 25% restocking fee.

Never again!

Sorry you guys had such a problem. I ordered the Ranchos on the group purchase. They drop shipped them from the nearest location, Dallas, and I had them two days later. Everything was in the box and fit fine. I've delt with them before without any problems and I will probably buy my lift from them, although I don't know if I will have them install it or do it myself.

I've had good luck with 4Wheel Parts also. Sometimes they don't have the parts in stock and have to get them from a warehouse or truck them from one of their other stores. Autoparts stores do the same thing and they have screwed up just as often. My impatience makes me lose my temper and that alone makes the whole ordeal seem far worse than it is.

That does sound like a nightmare. Sounds like some incompetent employees AND some disorganization. I, on the other hand, had exactly the opposite service from them when doing the Rancho group purchase. The front two shocks they sent me had a factory defect (the pistons were way undersized). I called the salesman (I'm pretty sure it was Carl) after they closed and left a message on his voicemail stating that I was right in the middle of this project and needed some help ASAP. At the time I wasn't sure the shocks were defective I just knew I had a problem. I got a call back in a few minutes. Carl said he was going out the door and saw that he had a voicemail message and checked the message and was calling back to see what the problem was. He put me on hold, went to the warehouse and pulled a set of shocks. After comparing notes we agreed that I had a factory defect. He sent replacements via 2-day air (at their expense). They of course also paid to have the defective shocks sent back at their expense. The defect was Rancho's fault and yet 4Wheel Parts sprung for the 2-day air. It was really exceptional customer service. I've been wishing they had one of their stores near me but they don't.

Dave.

I purchased four Rancho 9000 shocks plus the steering stabilizer through the recent group purchase. Everything showed up in a timely manner. However, one of the front shocks was for a different vehicle. I don't think it was 4WHEEL's error. The box had the correct markings but contained the wrong shock. Probably a factory packaging error. I called 4WHEEL and they gave me a UPS code and had the errant shock picked up on their tab. They gave me the choice of paying nothing and they would ship the new one when they received the errant one. I chose to pay for a replacement so that it would be shipped immediately and they promptly credited me the $55 when they received back the errant shock. Mail order shopping is always a gamble.

I have dealt with 4WParts several times. A couple times there was a problem but each time they made it right, and a couple times gave me something extra for my trouble. Often their prices are quite good--how about $75 for a Dana 60 half shaft vs. Dodge $175--as I discovered some years ago when shopping for this part for a 1980 Ram crew cab.

One of the times was a big one--the Detroit Locker did not fit due to miscommunication from Tractech, apparently (3. 54 vs. 4. 10 carriers). Even though I had installed the ring gear on it (thus marking the iron casing from the serrations under the bolt heads), they took it back and gave me an extra set of carrier bearings (expensive and hard to get at the time--thus they included two sets of bearings by the time we were done) so I could take the truck back to its original open diff. They gave me a full refund. Yes, I invested time, but I don't eel they misled me, and I feel they went the extra distance to help make it right.

That said, I agree it can be difficult to find employees who are knowledgeable and committed to service these days.

I think the problem I had is related mostly to an incompetent crew at the retail store, as well as a customer service rep answering email that didn't have a clue.

Still, I will avoid this place at all costs because I'm not going to risk this kind of mess again.

BTW, I called Rancho the other day and in less than five minutes had a set of sleeves and the instructions for my in-cab control en route to me. Should be here tomorrow.

Rancho gets a nice thumbs up. 4WheelParts still gets the bird. #ad
