2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Why have 255/85R 16's been forgotten?

When you compare them to 265's or 285's they appear to be the best..... what am I missing? I for one don't like the wider is better approach. I've found that wider is harder to move, uses more fuel. can cause road wander and are usually harder on steering components... ... BUT like fishing lures..... they offer some visual appeal if you like tires ... "that got back!"

I just put a set of the new BFG KM2's in this size on my 02 so they are not forgotten. I have a set of 16 inch moto metal rims they are mounted on and with 285 75 16 tires they stuck out past the bodyline farther than I liked but with these they look more normal.

I really liked the 255-85's when I had them on my truck. I generally prefer the 85 profile, but I would have to agree that they're getting tougher to find for some reason. I couldn't find a set when I went shopping this year so I had to go with 285-75's.

If I could find a set of 255-85s that were load range E locally in Anchorage, I'd be a happy man.

I run the 265's because that is what came with the Sport package. I don't like the looks of oversize tires or lifts either.

If you tow, use 245/70r 19. 5" these are F rated and 12 ply. . They are great for rolling resistance and mileage.

255/85's are a great looking tire. But they lack the floatation our trucks need when driving in the soft stuff. I went from 245's all the way to 315's until I could get my rig down the beach without airing down.

Toyo makes a 255/85 in the M-55 series; best tire I have ever run on a truck. This is a E rated tire that you can get 50k for tire wear life. I did not say it was cheap but buy on sale and they are worth it.

Yeah, couldn't find them when I went looking last winter. I had to go with 235/85's. I like them. I have to say the flotation thing is not an issue as I got into a mud hole surrounded by snow and had zero issues. I was impressed! Not too much noise and mileage didn't suffer more than 1 mpg. Strangely enough, they ended up correcting my odometer back to dead on?

That's what I'd expect--235-85's are the same diameter as the stock 265-75's.

My truck came stock with 215/85's per the data plate? It's a 3500.

Sorry, I'd missed the fact that you had a 3500. It's strange that 235-85s corrected your speedometer when your stock tires were 215-85s. I'm not sure what the nominal diameter of a 215-85 tire is, but it's noticeably less than a 235-85.
