TIM just learned one of the things I've been preaching for some time - it's easy, and very possible to exceed your Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) *long* before you ever hit the trucks Gross Combined Weigt Rating (GCWR)!

I'm right at my GVWR with a relatively small 24 foot kit 5er - even tho' I still have over 5000 lbs of GCWR left that I can't legally use...

And THAT is a lesson many either don't know, won't accept, or simply ignore!

And NO virginia, you CAN'T legally increase the trucks weight rating by addition of extra springs, airbags or a pair of crutches - it *might* be PHYSICALLY capable of carrying more weight - but the certified legal weight RATING is established by the MAKER, not by how much aftermarket garbage you install later...

The short and proper solution to those owners wanting to legally and safely tow heavier loads with their trucks is not to simply strap on more bandaids - just

GET A BIGGER TRUCK!

Ya Like a F-550

Lemme be very honest with Tim: I researched both models and bought the 3500 SRW because I wanted cab lights and "3500" on the tailgate. If I'd used good sense instead of snob appeal I woulda bought a 2500. There ain't that much difference. Now if you went with a Ford ...

Ah, Geez..... Was this a special option order? I do not have it on the tailgate... Just says "Heavy Duty" (and that's subjective) and 4X4 SLT... . I'll have to look at the build sheet

Don't go do that, kvalskie, I erred. 3500 is on the side, not the tailgate. Shows you what I learned in 62,000 miles

Oh, Just funnin' with ya' :D Just a bit o' sillyness... . was feelin' a lil' punchy last night after a few beers :-laf

Well his numbers made no sense, and I didn't see ( I admit I skimmed the posts) anyone challange them. There's not magic to a trailer (assuming a camping trailer) going up in weight, but from 3Klbs (dry) to 7Klbs, that's magic. Their grosses are only 1klbs or so more than their dry weight.

I can see the truck ~8Klbs. I've had mine on the scale.

But a 3Klb trailer become 7klbs-8klbs... Magic!!!

OR I'm really missing somthing like it was really a car trailer and there was a car on it.

Pssst, it's called a car hauler.

However, it most certainly does not weight 3K lbs empty, that's more of Tim's BS. I have a 20' flatbed car hauler and it weighs 2100lbs. empty, and maybe 6100 lbs with my FJ40 on it.

Tim, started this thread just to antagonize 3/4 ton truck owners. If Tim had a 3/4 ton truck, the 1 tons would be no good. The majority of the guys here no there are minimal differences.

Have a great day,

jd

I would not expect a reply from Tim. He has not posted since last August, which was only 8 months after he joined TDR. Get the picture?

Well, if that's the kind of feller he is he just won't get no help from anybody around here. I like cab lights but if I had it to do over again I'd buy a 3/4 ton. The additional weight of the 3500 just takes away from the truck's payload. I did them numbers a long time ago. Incidentally, one more message from me and I'll hit the 1000 mark! That and a buck will get me a cup of coffee somewhere.

So even more so his numbers make even less sense.

1st Timmay is a tool, bbbbbuuuuuuutttttttt his trailer is a 14k equipment trailer not a 7k car hauler, so that it weighs more than your car hauler would make since.

SO, what's your point? Why didn't you buy a real truck with a long bed?[/QUOTE]

I agree long beds are for haulin ***** short beds you can maybe haul your groceries... . as long as you dont eat as much as I do. Ill run weight for weight with any single wheel 1 ton, Overload the only difference, just something to charge you more for. Everyone has their opinion mine is this, If its CTD it good for me :) Even my wimpy, weak, wussy 3/4 ton

Did you fail reading comprehension in school? One I don't agree with most of Timmay's post. But that trailer can very well be a 14K GVW trailer. See in his post you linked to.

Remember, this is a ball hitch trailer 20' long and hardly anything inside and we're within a couple hundred pounds of the GVWR. Yes I could move my truck back on the trailer and reduce the tongue weight a hair without compromising stability or overloading the trailer (it's a 14k GVWR trailer) but that still doesn't leave much cushion.

I'm glad I got the 3500.

Did you just miss the 14K part?

My 18' 10k trailer weighs in at 1900lbs according to the title, while my buddies 16' 7k trailer is the same. Someone is lying :-laf
