Dodge Hybrid W/ Cummins

Technical: Ignition Process in Diesels

I was looking on the Detroit Diesel site and noticed that it is a Diamler-Chrysler company. My question is how come Dodge doesnt put a Detroit into the Ram ? I'm in no way complaining about Cummins as I believe they are far superior and far more reliable than Detroit but it just seems like they'd put they're own engine in their trucks.

I think the smallest Detroit enigine is like 40 or 50 series witch is a big medium duty engine to big for even ower trucks. Some where I thought I heard of a 4 cylinder Detroit being available in the Dakota in Mexico?? I am not a huge fan of Detroit Diesel but they have there place. I think they have the most responsive engine out today due to there electronics or programing.

Another reason is that DC acquired Detroit long after they started putting the CTD in pickups. They continue to do so because they know the Cummins name sells more trucks than Dodge steering components.

from all the truckers i have talked to detroit has come along way and are a great engine. cat, cummins, detroit just like gm, ford, dodge. all good trucks all good engines

Detroit Diesel

Detroit Diesel has certainly come a long way from the old 2 stroke engines. They have had to do something right to be the most popular diesel in class 8 trucks for the last how many years. I've always been a CAT/Cummins fan, but have driven Detroit the last couple years (part-time), and it is a fine engine. Any of them can have problems, and any of them can go 6, 700,000 miles or more with reasonable care. The landscape is changing as manufacturers seek "vertical integration" - use their own brand of engines. There are new alliances monthly, it seems: Volvo will have Volvo or Cummins engines, Freightliner will have Detroit or Mercedes engines, I don't know if KW or Pete will have access to Detroit in the numbers they have had in the past. It is rumored that other dealers (such as KW) will have to pay a "franchise" fee to advertise Detroit Diesel service.

The only thing I am sure of - I would much sooner look at a GM pickup with an inline Detroit Diesel than with the current engine choice!

The Mercedes Benz 6 cyl. is pretty nice. It sounds like the cummins at idle and it's not quiet like all the other new diesels are. I wouldn't mind seeing it in the Ram.

If I'm not mistaken Detroit, John Deere and Cat were all approached by Dodge for an engine before launching the diesel Ram. JD and Cat said they couldn't make it light enough to meet Dodge's specs. Not sure what happened with Detroit.

D/D owns perkins and if I remember correctly VM, both make engines simular in size to our cummins, in fact the perkins 1000-6 is a 354ci. Bob

perkins is owned by john deere. DD is owned by DC so is freightliner,VM,etc. DC is a major fan of diesels thank the Lord b/c ford and chevy have their heads in thier ass b/c they want a high revving gasser that runs on diesel:( aluminum heads?..... never! i would love to see a diesel electric hybrid talk about fast!

I may be wrong but I thought that Perkins was owned by Caterpillar. The wheeled tractors that the AGCO corp. make and Cat markets under the Challenger name use the Perkins engine in the lower horsepower ranges.

I have seen a four cylinder mud pump that had a Perkins rebadged and sold by Cat, someone I know calls the small Cat engines "Perkapillar's":D

From Macks website:

1990 Mack Trucks, Inc. becomes a wholly-owned subsidiary of Renault V. I.

In 2000 Mack was purchased from Renault by Volvo.

Are Detroit Diesels still 2 stroke?

When I drove long haul, (15 years ago), I disliked the Detroits. Screaming, whining engines. It was either Cat or Cummins for me.

Nope. The Model 60's are 4-cycle. The 2-cycles (-53, -71 and -92 series) couldn't meet current emission criteria.
