Detroit Diesel
Detroit Diesel has certainly come a long way from the old 2 stroke engines. They have had to do something right to be the most popular diesel in class 8 trucks for the last how many years. I've always been a CAT/Cummins fan, but have driven Detroit the last couple years (part-time), and it is a fine engine. Any of them can have problems, and any of them can go 6, 700,000 miles or more with reasonable care. The landscape is changing as manufacturers seek "vertical integration" - use their own brand of engines. There are new alliances monthly, it seems: Volvo will have Volvo or Cummins engines, Freightliner will have Detroit or Mercedes engines, I don't know if KW or Pete will have access to Detroit in the numbers they have had in the past. It is rumored that other dealers (such as KW) will have to pay a "franchise" fee to advertise Detroit Diesel service.
The only thing I am sure of - I would much sooner look at a GM pickup with an inline Detroit Diesel than with the current engine choice!
