Need your expertise please.

WIF light came on other morning, not even mile away from house, turned around, parked it at home. Truck didnt bog down in those few mins of going back home. Later in day, drained both filters, multiple times. Initial front filter had probably about a cup of water in it, maybe less? Subsequent drains mostly clear. Rear filter only trace amounts of water on first one. All good on subsequent drains. Cycled through drains about 6x's. 7th time..WIF light still comes on. Have not tried starting truck yet. Am afraid of repeat of last year where soon after picking up the truck from south Texas, it sat for couple weeks, then some heavy rain, had serious WIF issue and had to make insurance claim on the truck. Almost 30K to fix that last year.

Very strange that I had water in front filter and not the back. I always drain and check rear every few weeks, but not front. Now i will always be checking front also.

So there the truck sits until i figure what else to check and test before trying to start. Im new to diesels but learning quick. I see some have issues with the sensors, so i guess i will check that this wknd. I cant help but think ive been sold a very nice shiny lemon though lol.

Thots?

Do you know how so much water is entering your fuel system? In the past 25 years I've put about 700,000 miles on 5 different Rams and not a drop of water in the filters.

I hear ya...have seen many like you who have never had issues. I will be following up with others suggestions to look for...cracked filter cap...check breather tube off the tank....

It takes some time for the sensor to clear the water and the fault. Every time in the last 30 years I had thatlight come on it took some time to vanish after the water was drained.

Just make sure to keep the bowl free of water, drain regulary until you cant see water anymore.

More then likely your last fuel stop sold you contaminated Diesel, there is no other way of having that much water in the tank then fuel related issues.

Aside from getting some water in your last fuel stop, or you may have water getting by fuel door and down the "flap"! I turned an aluminum fuel cap with o-rings to seal mine from debris. Might want to invest in one from Genos.

Good luck! My latest truck didn't even come from the factory with a fuel cap!
mine either...since there's no cap, and no clear idea why i had so much water or bad fuel last year, decided to get one of those Geno's locking caps to eliminate the possibility of someone dumping crap in my
My bad, 2022s don't have a fuel cap. Sorry for that.
re: fuel cap..yep, have a GENOs locking cap.

Dont you think its strange that I have cloudy fuel in front filter but the rear comes out completely clear? I did a cycle of draining again today and here are the pics. Coke bottle is from front and jar is from rear. Maybe I just need to keep draining until its clear in front? The front is way cleaner than that first drain that i did earlier, but its still not clear. This would be the 8th drain ive done so far.

What filters are in the truck?

Don’t worry about the capless design, it keeps water out. The extra cap is good for dust. But, just like anything that’s if it’s in good working order.

I’d make sure your capless seal is good. Pour some diesel into the spout without opening the flapper and see if it goes in the tank or stays in the spout.

The front fuel being dirty tells me the front canister has more sediment in it. I’d probably pull the front filter and inspect the canister.

Filters....truck was last serviced by dealer, so whatever they use.

I would remove the front filter, clean the housing and WIF contacts. Replace the filter, then put a drain hose on it and with the drain open cycle the pump several times until fuel comes out clear.

I would do it with the old filter first, then install the new filter, and then do it again with the new filter until satisfied.

update...i did finally get clear fuel through the front filter after more Sat morning drain cycles, about a full gal worth. WIF light stopped coming on...started truck and runs great.
Will be replacing filters later today and hopefully drive it some this week. I do plan on talking to RAM dealer. Truck shouldnt be getting that much water in front filter and none in back. Thankful i didnt have a repeat of last year. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Without knowing the specs on the filters it’s hard to say it’s not working as designed. If the rear filter is only 80% effective at water removal and the front filter is 99% you’ll get more water in the front filter.

On top of that there is the difference in free water and emulsified water separation. The rear filter is closer to the pump, so all the water will be emulsified, which is harder to filter out. You may get some free water separation in the added distance to the front filter, especially with the amount of water you had in the system.

I’d sure like to see some filtration and separation specs for the OE filters.

Do you know of any other users where thats been an issue, similar to mine? Ill go thru repair invoice from last yr and see if I can find that info for you. Also...do you or others think the truck sitting and not being used often might contribute to what ive experienced so far?

I haven’t seen anyone with water in fuel issues, period. So there isn’t a lot to compare to.

I highly doubt you’ll find filtration specs on the invoice. I’m also not saying those are the specs, just stating that without knowing it’s hard to say if it’s correct or wrong.

Do you park outside where the fuel tank goes thru extreme temp swings?

Yes, its sitting in driveway, not covered. Is north texas...so yes on the temp swings.
