Will a VE Pump 4BTA work on a 6BTA?

Apparently so and well. I pulled one from a 93 Ram that I had messaged a bit prior to replacing with another modified pump. The 4BTA pump ran very well. Someone must have swapped the high pressure head cuz all 6 cylinders had fuel. :)

Pump Numbers as follows;

Engine CPL 986 (4BTA)

Bosch # 460 424 079

Cummins Pump Part # 391 3443

There is a hand stapmed # on the far right of the area where all the ID #'s are located. It must refer to the 6-Cylinder head installed.

Anyone seen one of these on a Dodge Ram?? Wonder if the 1993 Dodge Rams had OEM pumps replaced from the dealership

At first read, I wondered how you got fuel to 6 cylinders from 4 outlets. Then I read you had a 6 cyl head...

SO, I guess your question really is, will the BODY of a 4bt work with the head of a 6BT? I'd say yes, even before I saw you put this on here. A VE is a VE. Put a different head on it, and there you go.

My latest pump that I bought was from an Onan generator. It was brand new I thought right on I got it for a good price. It had a couple of things different. It was for a 6cyl, but when we took it apart we found that it had a 9. 5mm head/rotor which wasn’t going to do me any good. So we installed one of my 12mm head/rotors in it. The results were actually surprising. We also had to replace the cam. It didn’t have the lift that our have. All went well and it actually flowed more fuel than the last pump I had with the same head/rotor in it. It was up about 28cc at 850 test stand rpm’s and up about 40cc’s at 500 rpm’s on the test stand. This is with the air turned on. I think this had to do with the new supply pump that it had in it. I plan on putting this pump on and doing some testing. I just need to make it down to the dyno and find out where I am at right now with the 14mm.

The VE 4cyl case and the 6cyl case is the same thing. Supply pump should also be the same. A 6cyl head/rotor bolts right up.

COOL

Thanks. Perhaps I now need to tweak it a bit further and give it over to the pump shop for a measurement/test run.

I really don't need more fuel. I can't burn all I have now :(

If you put a 4bt pump on a 6bt, you can use 2 cylinders to pump air. I just figured out how to get on board air! ;)

The injection timing points would not work out. You could pump air with three cylinders but you would require a 3b pump.

Hmm, there's a core 4BT at a junkyard here in town. Hmm, I got a spare 12mm pump head... .

I would like to talk to an expert on VE building and find out what the best one to start with would be for adding a 14mm pump head... . Around here though, "VE?? Deer in the headlight look... Oh, you want a P-pump!"

Ok, then the next question is what other parts from a 4bt will swap?

Starter? Lift pump?

Any turbo parts?

I know where one sits in a barn near here I'll have to look, but you guys have more info on the subject in general, i am just a take it off and replace it guy.

Starter is per application and not the engine. The engine parts will swap (to best of my feable knowledge) but then again we are talking about parts you will never need.

Water Pump (probably worn out)

Gear case

Injection pump

Valve covers

Rocker arm/towers

Push tubes

Why would you need any of that?

HTML:
know where one sits in a barn near here

Now that would make an excellent powerplant for an S-10, Dakota, Jeep, whatever.

So it's better complete than canabalized.

"Why would you need any of that?"

Good point. Bad habit I have . Can't resist adding to my "what if I ever need that" pile.

Jleonard has a good point about using it for a Jeep powerplant. I have 5 jeeps stashed (20 acres of woods) one a 68 station wagon. A little more power from my motorhome and I could move on to that. (If I stopped doing bodywork on my 72 Jeepster..... )
