Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) will an 01 starter fit other years

had to replace the starter on the 01 today. wondering about having the old one rebuilt to have on hand for a spare. the core charge is only $5 so its almost not worth taking it back. we have a lot of ctds in the family(trucks and tractors) so i am just wondering if it will fit on other gens. specificly a first or third gen. motor.

I know first n sec are different not sure about 3rd gen's

Third gen has a plugin trigger wire which you could jump with an add on wire 1st gen has a much larger starter but I think it would work.

Well I know On the first gen we just put a 96 motor in we had to use the 96 starter because the first gen is different
