Here I am

Will I get shot for asking another fuel filter question?

We are finally parked in a place where I can do my own maintenance on the CTD. Oo. I've always had the fuel filter and oil filter changed at the dealer. I understand they use a 10 micron filter. Is this true? I am still running the stock fuel pump and have had no problems with it so far. I am thinking about going to the 7 micron, or possibly the 2 micron filter I have been reading about here.

I am pretty comfortable with the procedure to change the fuel filter (I have done SOME research), but my question is: Will the increased filtration rate put enough of an extra load on the fuel pump that I will start having problems? I don't have a fuel pressure gauge (yet) so have no means of monitoring it as of now. I would like the extra filtration, but cannot justify an aftermarket fuel system just for that reason.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks, Steve

Ive been using the 7micron with stock pump with no problems. When I switch to the 2 micron, I will be using GDP's kit.

There is no such thing (that I'm aware of) as a 2-micron filter that fits the stock canister. The "old" 10-micron part numbers (FS19579) have been superseded by the new 7-micron parts, so in the future you have no choice but to run the 7-micron.

I agree with the logic that the stock pump will have a very hard time pushing through a 2-micron filter, especially once it collects a little dirt.

Which fuel pump do you have on the truck now?

Not to mention you've got an '03, like mine... I'm pretty new here, but it seems like the trucks that have the stock external fuel pump are having alot of failures. Can anybody help me out here?

What do you need to know?

The external pumps (mounted on the filter canister) are somewhat prone to failure.

Dodge has a retrofit kit that moves the pump to an in-tank unit. Far more reliable, but not field-serviceable.

I have an 03 and ran the 10 micron filter and held 6 1/2# cruising. I switched to the 7 micron filter and lost about 1# using the stock filter mounted pump. DC replaced my pump with the new intank unit at 85K miles. Now I am running about 9# with the 7 micron filter.

I don't really think the filter caused any problems, but when the tech offered to replace the pump under warranty---I said go for it!! I think you will be fine.

If you are going to start changing your own oil, I'd recommend getting one of the Fumoto oil drain valves from Geno's. It cost about $25, but it is worth it's weight in gold to keep the hot oil from running down your arm.

That's what I've read. I'm considering a FASS type setup if I'm going to have to replace what I've got now. I like the fuel/air/water seperator, and the fact that the pump is external. I figure that if the FASS were to fail, I could just temporarily hook up my old fuel pump again. That seem like a good idea? I'm pretty clueless as to how the FASS hooks up, so that may not even be possible.

Thanks guys. Sounds like the 7 micron is the way to go. Does Geno's have a 7mic filter? I see 2 in my last Geno's. One is FS19800E for $14. 95, the other is FS19579E for $11. 95. What is the difference? I am not worried about the $3, just wondering what the difference is.

Ryan, I think I have the fuel pump on the side of the engine. I have never had it changed out yet, so I am still running whatever came from the factory in '03. If it matters, I only have 25k miles on the truck, but 1/2 to 2/3 of that has been pulling an 17k fiver all over western USA.

Randy--thanks for the tip about the Fumoto valve. Has anyone ever had one of these open accidently from trash on the road? I don't do any off-roading.

Since we are talking oil, what about the Geno's oil filters? Would you guys recommend the Standard, or the Stratapore? Both are Fleetguard. Again, what is the diff?

Are Geno's filters warranty friendly? I would really like to support them if they are.

Enough for now.
Thanks again guys.

On Edit: I found the fuel filters on Geno's website. The premium one is a 7 micron, while the less expensive is a 10 micron. Could find no further info on the difference in oil filters however.
Thanks again.

I installed one on mine with the last oil change, and it's pretty much impossible for that to happen. The valve is pretty stiff to move, plus it requires you to push the lever against a pretty tight spring before you can even slide the valve open. Sliding the valve takes enough effort in itself that I think it would be borderline impossible for trash to do it.

I run the stratapore filters. I was told here that they were the better filter and were highly recommended.

I been using the 7977 baldwin on my 04 and my 06. No problems at all. The ff runs around 13. 36 and the of balwind also) costs me 6. 37. Not bad.
