I bought the truck back in May and the windows have a very thick film of hard water spotting... I've tried everything to get it off... Laquer Thinner, Wax, Windex, CLR, everything... .

Anyone know what will work????

Magic Cloth

You get some of those magic cloths dcmille has for sell. Email him at -- email address removed -- They work. Just do a search for them. The people that have them like em. My son had hard water spots on the windows of his house from the sprinkler(that his wife sets out to go ???). I had some extra when I ordered mine so I gave him a couple and they took it off. He had already tryed several different things so I said try this. Made a believer out of him and his wife.

I use a product called Bruce's GSR. It is a glass water spot and stain remover. It also removes fine scratches which is why I got it. I had real fine scratches in my side windows from rolling them down when they were dusty. It works great and is easy to use. Just follow the instructions on the container. I found mine at a local window tint shop. If your local window tint shop doesn't have this brand, they might have another brand that will work just as good.

Thanks guys.

I was thinking this was going to take something abrasive. This stuff is c-a-k-e-d

Before I try buy anything I'm going to give Steel Wool a try... . it's always good for taking off paint on windows after painting a car... little over spray and such... don't know why I just now remembered that.

Lot of people cringe at the thought, but steel wool is harmless to glass... .

stop!

Before you use steel wool try some baking soda. I can scratch glass with steel wool, I can't with baking soda. Use it all the time for wine glasses and such.

probably depends on the grade of steel wool.

Get yourself some {bar keepers friend} it`s sold in most stores. It is in a container like ajax or comet. It`s non abrasive and formulated for glass. Just smear it on the wet window rub around a little and rinse off. Also mix 1/4 cup Isorphyl {rubbing}alcohol, and 1/4cupwhite vinegar in an empty windex bottle, and fill with water shake and use like windex for in between times. That will keep them sparkling clean.

removing water spots

Before trying abrasives, try plain old vinegar. Most water spots are calcium deposits, which is alkaline. The acetic acid in vinegar will usually remove them quickly.

Ordinary tooth paste will often clean up glass. I have used it to polish out fine scratch marks so it should remove caked on water spots.

The one ICEMAN and Dkevdog use works great as does vinegar. I myself have used a simple bottle of Coca-Cola or Pepsi to clean them with newspaper to wipe them down. Yep,might get a little messy but it works. When done doen use some Eagle One Wet,Mothers Showtime or a simular top coat detailer and you'll never see them again..... Andy

Bon-Ami for water spots

I had a similar problem when I bought my 70' Challenger. The car sat outside next to the sprinkler and was watered quite often and I almost didnt buy the car because of the water spots. Afrend of mine told my that water spots were no problem and to use "Bon-Ami" ( it is similar to ajax) and on the label is said "never scratches never will" and it worked the windows look like new.

Okay kids, you better not be seen with dirty windows after posting here!:p

And Bon-Ami is anti-gun, so I don't use their stuff anymore. Levi's jeans too.

i can back up iceman's claim, i saw the before and after windows, it really did get them clean and clear. i used another approach, i jsut put a coat of rain-x on all the windows, it was alittle harder to get off bc all the hard water crap came with it but it worked.

A few of the windows on my house get overspray from the sprinkler system and they can get real bad. I found a heavy duty cleaner called CLR. It cleaned two years worth of mineral build-up off my windows.

I found it at Home Depot. It's great stuff, just don't get it on your paint.

Thanks for the good thread, I have a shell that I bought used and it sat with sprinklers running on one side and the glass was spotted really bad and I had tried vinegar, steel wool and several other things with no success but after reading this thread I tried some rubbing compoud and the windows are like new.

Thanks guys.

Gojo

About the time I was giving up on getting the road film off the windshield I tried Gojo. You know the glare you get when its raining with oncoming headlights. The Gojo stock # 1109 worked great. I applied it to a wet windshield and let it sit 10 minutes with No sunlight(at night). Used old news paper to work it in then hosed it off.

Remember to clean your wipers.

Tim

If nothing else works, use ClayMagic the same way you'd use it on paint. It will take off water marks. Actually they make three grades from course to fine that will take off, but the stuff you get at the autoparts store will work fine.
