The fuse for my parking lights blew. While trouble shooting it I found the trouble to be in the front or engine compartment harness. I pulled the power dist. box out and opened the harnes to find that all the ground wires had the insulation melted, and shorted to some other wires they came in contact with. What a mess!! #ad
Could it have been hit by lightning that it only fried the grounds?

I wouldn't think lightening would be the problem. If you have a sizeable hot lead that shorted at the connector, it would melt the insulation off the surrounding wires. I fried the wiring harness on a Chevy (forgive me) 1 ton diesel (it was in the seventies, allright #ad
) and it was a short in a glow plug feed wire to the exhaust manifold. High current wire. Anyway, it fried about 50 percent of the 1. 5 inch diameter harness and there was only one wire shorted. Finally the fuse blew or I believe the whole truck would have burned #ad

Alan is probably right. It is unlikely you got struck by lightning unless you're aware of it. And it sounds like a short or high amp draw somewhere.

However, lightning does strange things to a vehicle's electrical system. I saw my buddy's Honda get struck while he was driving it. The computers, battery, connections, etc. all survived. The inside of the alternator turned into black powder. Not a single wire remained, just bearings and shaft. I would have never guessed that one. Bottom line, lightning is unpredictable.

FIRE MARSHAL NOTES PRODUCT RECALLS

HELENA - Two types of vehicles and a toaster oven have been the subject of
recent product recalls because of the fire hazards they pose, State Fire
Marshal Terry Phillips said Wednesday.

Phillips said his office has been notified of the recall of:

* Dodge Ram trucks manufactured between June 1993 and April 1996. Some
trucks contain an ignition switch and wiring that could overheat and
possibly catch fire. Dealers will correct the problem. Owners who do not
receive the free repairs within a reasonable time should contact Chrysler at
1-800-992-1997.

Hope it helps and isn't just a scam.

No Scam!
Got my recall notice a while back, haven't done anything about it yet. Got one for the headlight switch too, think they'll give me a refund for the updated switch kit I bought a year ago to fix it? Me neither. Haven't had the spring pertch welding done either. I used to work at a dealership and bodymen, no matter how good they are at refinishing (and these guys were good) are the WORST welders I've ever seen. I'd do it myself if I could get paid for it (and had the time).
