The women around me
I guess it started with mom - back in '57 - she received a 12 guage from dad for her first anniversary present. (Next year she received fishing tackle). Dad was west pointer ('47) career air force, full bird colonel fighter/test pilot - expert from small handguns to aerial combat, except for one of the machine gun tests. He entered marriage with the thought that a wife was meant to cook and polish fishing lures during spare time - that lasted about five years. Unfortunately dad drives a ford pu. Have no brothers, but two sisters.
Little sister was deemed as "DAD'S project" for the year before she returns for the family outing to deer camp next year in Michigan. She may be the only Yupper who can't shoot. She decided two years ago that she wanted to start to hunt - but unfortuntely, the feet back, hips forward, shoulders back position that she employs for shooting doesn't work too well. Dad's got a year to fix it.
Big sister, OTOH, is a very good shot and is loaded for bear - literally. Very good shot (~85%) with her 7mm upwards of 1000 yards from all 4 positions. 95%+ with her 20 guage shooting skeet. Deadly at 100 yards with her 22 going after groundhogs. Has a horse farm so groundhogs are considered a dangerous nuisance - so it's always open season for them. Goes deer hunting several times a week either at her place or mine. Also drives a CTD
My Girlfriend - 80%, but getting better at skeet - with a Mossberg 835 12 guage, For the deer, she prefers buckshot til she's more sure of herself. Drives a 1500, but as with shooting and hunting, she's learning
My best female friend - tall leggy blonde - someone you'd expect to see in Playboy, not wielding a 12 guage. All I can say here is don't let her looks fool you. She'll clean your clock at the range. Also drives a CTD
All of them except for my little sister ride horses; specifically dressage, a discipline which requires incredible balance and extremely light sensitive hands. Christina, my sister, often brings her students (95%female) over to my farm to shoot skeet, and I am utterly amazed at their skillset the first time out. Usually 80%+ at the end of an hour or so after never having held a gun in their life.
As for buying guns in NJ - it's the biggest pain in the rear. Expect to wait at least one month before buying -fingerprinting, local background checks, references from two people that you know, etc. etc. etc on top of the federal system. Most people I know around here, end up buying them elsewhere.
As for Concealed Carry - forget it. Regular carry - forget it.
35 deer and still counting at my farm and our season is only about half over (every day 'cept sundays til mid february)

BTW, any Michiganders out there know if "Escanaba in da moonlight" is on vhs or dvd yet or planned?
