Womanizer or lady's man?

A topic has come up in conversation a few times regarding behavior such as our last president exibited. While most of the country refered to a man of this moral deficit as a womanizer, several left leaning liberals refer to him as a lady's man. My wife tends to agree that a lady's man is the same as a womanizer. I always thought that a lady's man was a man who prefered the company of his lady and was very attentive to her. She insists that would be a gentleman and a lady's man prefers the company of as many women as he can score. She even said that if I ever considered myself to be a lady's man, we were in for some serious marital trouble. And here I always thought it was a good thing to be a lady's man. So the question is... Is being refered to as a lady's man a complement, an insult, or a nice way of refering to a womanizer? What is Mr. Clinton in your definition?

Clinton is a womanizer IMO. The difference between a womanizer and a ladies man IMO is that a ladies man naturally attracts them and uses charm, looks, etc to get the ladies. A womanizer is a person that will do whatever he deems necessary to get a woman including lying and cheating.

I've always considered a "lady's man" to be a guy who was comfortable in the company of many women, but not neccessarily involved with any of them. Kind of like Rock Hudson who wasn't interested in women's sexuality but seemingly comfortable mingling with women.



I've heard the term "Fancy Dan" and always thought of that as a "lady's man" too.



There is no question what a womanizer is.



What do you call a woman who likes the company of many men. And what do you call a manizer?

Not that anyone asked but here is my take on the term "Lady's Man". First and foremost, "Lady's Man" is an OXYMORON emphasis on the "MORON" part.

To be a Lady's Man, a man would need to be attractive and heavily involved to a real lady. In which case, any "Lady" who would lower her standards to involve herself and continue to involve herself after she had come to the realization of involving herself with a "Lady's Man" basically qualifies as a tramp, harlot, woman of ill repute, so on and so forth. Real Ladies wouldn't give the time of day to a "Lady's Man" once she learned of his motives and practices.



As for me, try as I might to be a Lady's Gentleman at all costs I'm sure I fall short.

Well my take is a little different. I've contrasted the term ladies' man with a man's man, and some guys can be both. IMHO and considering personalities we all know, Brad Pitt and Michael J. Fox could be called ladies' men because women are attracted to them primarily because of their good-looks. On the other hand, I regard Arnold Schwartzkoff and (the late) John Wayne as man's men because of strong chartacter image. Some guys like the handsome Howie Long could be considered both.



Now about Slick Willy... ... He was a useless, manipulative, lying, reprehensible, wife-cheating shred of pond scum who didn't have the decency to face up to any of his transgressions despite the fact he was caught hands-down. If I ever have the opportunity, I will flip him off to his face !!! Any questions? Sorry I wasn't more explicit.

Thanks for all the replies... I guess it's a term that can be used either way. My aunt refers to my uncle as "MY lady's man". They have a marriage that's the envy of anyone who knows them. My thoughts were that she knows how to treat a husband in that if she flatters him to no end and spoils him at home, he won't give second thought to a glance from another woman. It seems to work for them. He's involved with many women. The nice part is, she's every one of them! He spoils her just as much. You'd have to know them to realize two people could be so good to each other.

The puzzlement for me is my wife is taken back by my aunts referal to my uncle in such a way. My wife says her ex-husband is a ladies man and that's not a good thing. He also had many women and she was none of them. Save maybe a live in house-keeper and baby-sitter for his kid from a previous victim. I went down the same road with a cheating ex-wife. Is she a gentleman's lady? Sigh...

Then I hear my favorite babe Janet Reno call slick Willie a lady's man. Now there's a nice couple!!!

So I have a very complimentary sounding term that I had learned to associate with the very best of husbands suddenly turned completely around. That reeks... I had hoped to spoil my wife to the point of earning the same title. Well at least it sounded like a good thing.

Is Dodge/Cummins also an oxymoron? It would seem to be but I don't think I'd want a Ford or Chevy even if it had a Cummins.

Time to back up and punt...

Example 1 - My friend Eric, Gets more a$$ than a toilet seat but does not go out looking for it, the women just come up to him I've seen it happen dozens of times ages 20 -50, its amazing, he doesn't sweet talk them he's just a honest polite guy and really good looking. You could say the women use him ( pity the fool)... ... ... ... . THIS IS A LADIES MAN



Example 2 - My friend Sal, not that good looking but a very smoothe talker if you know what I mean. Everything he says and does in front of a women is for one purpose..... to score, this my friends is a... ... ..... WOMANIZER.

Although I never thought of it until I saw the title-post question, I had a flash of definitions bounce thru my head...



Ladies' man (note, not "Lady's man"-- like one man owned by that Lady over there)---Ladies' man is a guy, like mentioned in TMc's post, who is single, and (quote) gets more a$$ than a toilet seat... ... If he continues that behavior after he's married, he's a womanizer... . Unfortunately, the other guy, Sal, is like TMc said, a womanizer... . If he continues that kind of behavior after marriage, he's scum.



Bill Clinton, Gary Con-did-it, and etc. ---for them "womanizer" would be an upgrade.



Taken at its most polite definition, Ladies' Man, IMHO, is one who they (ladies, girls, chicks and women) all like, whether they're taking turns banging him, or whether he's not giving it up at all. If he's always got females around him, say, at work, and during break-time/lunchtime they invite themselves to his table, or even they do that "light touch or pat in passing" to him (that's the one that would land you in court for the big S. H. if you did it), he's a ladies' man. If he's inviting himself to the their table, he's a womanizer.....



after all this deep thought, it occurs to me... . it's in the behavior of who's "hunter" and who's "hunted".

Rich, I'll have to agree with you and those who think like you. You always hit the nail on the head. Websters dictionary defines a "Lady's man" as a man who enjoys the company of women and is very attentive to them. A "womanizer" is a man who is sexually permiscuous with women. I beleave the term "lady's man" has been twisted to mean "womanizer" as it sounds less incriminating and more flattering. Women who like permiscuous men call them a "lady's man" so it doesn't sound like they are a slut for being involved with them. Not a fair shake for a man who is a real lady's man such as my uncle who would never even consider straying on his wife. Yet he is the envy of alot of women not for any other reason than the way he treats his wife. He even occasionally books mini vacations on the beach for the two of them and picks her up from work with two glasses of champagne to greet her with in the parking lot and luggage in the trunk ready to go for a weekend of good food, relaxation and sunsets. How many of us actually do things like that for our wives? He does alot of things like that for her. He is in my definition no less than a true lady's man.
