Folks,

I have a 2004. 5 Ram with the 310 HP 5. 9 and a 6 SPEED TRANS.

Yesterday it began to run poorly just as I got home. I believe it has a fuel system problem. Filter looks fine. There are no problems reported by the OBP port.

Engine cranks but generally won't start. Ocasionally it will start but only for about 30 seconds and then it dies. It sounds like it is running out of fuel. I have opened the fuel filter drain and it is barely draining anything.

I have inspected the fuel system and it does not appear to have a lift pump.

Is this correct or is there one in the tank or filter assy?

I have looked at every part of the fuel rail and cannot

seem to figure out where to connect a temporary fuel presure gauge.

Can anyone provide instructions.

Plan to take another stab at it tonight then send it to the dealer tomorow.

I have planed to purchase a FASS pump but would like to get it runing first.

Any sugestions?

I am panicked as we have planned to Vegas next week for the Mopars at the Strip event and need the truck to tow my hot rod.

there is a lift pump inside the fuel tank. You should hear it purge once the key is in run 0-30 seconds.

A possible test would be: Pop the filter cap, drain the filter bottle and replace cap.
Turn on the key to prime the filter bottle 2 times for 30 seconds each.
Remove filter cap and see if it refilled. If not, you can suspect a lift pump or intermediate filter. See tank vent thread for good instruction in removing tank and fuel pump. Maybe even do the vent mod while you are at it... .

First off check your fuel pressure to the CP3. Easiest way to check is turn you fuel drain on and have someone turn the key on. If fuel comes out your pump is working. If it is getting fuel pressure you open a new can of worms. :{

Your 04. 5 doesn't have a fuel tank mounted pump. Unless you have a rare one, your pump is mounted on the fuel filter and they are always dying. Check out GlacierDiesel's website and you'll learn what you need to do to fix it reliably and never have to worry about it again.

Thanks for the replies.

I did some more testing and have concluded that the lift pump is dead. I originally was unsure where the pump was, it turns out that my truck has the pump on the filter in the engine compartmant.

I have ordered a replacement kit from Glacier Diesel with a gauge.

It should arrive tomorrow, I cannot wait to hear the old dodge rattle again.

Thanks for your advice.
