Here I am

won't start. Possible FASS pump failure, stranded in Jackson Hole, WY

Crank but no start

Obsolete Parts

Glad he got it repaired, but just for reference in case it happens to anyone else, you can run the truck forever at governed speed without hurting anything. Yes it does not sound normal but it is impossible to do any damage.

Thanks, nice to have in my toolbelt. No FASS on the 5500, but nice to know about how it really works. Curious, if you know anything about the 2018 commercial ISB 6.7? I'M installing a second 70-gallon fuel tank on my 2019 International MV607 (4300) and there are no in tank pumps. With everything painted red, nothing really stands out. like a lift pump. Can't get some info off Quick Serve app; not sure if they mask it or if its deleted, but result is the same if I can't see it. Thanks for any info.

Cheers, Ron

Ron, your International probably doesn’t have a lift pump. As I mentioned previously, our school buses don’t have one. That’s why I asked at the very beginning of this thread about the need for a lift pump on these pickups. I may be wrong, but I don’t think there’s any real functional difference in the HP pumps on the the pickup and the buses.

Just to clarify here, this was NOT a lift pump problem. The problem here was basically a plugged fuel line. I don’t care what lift pump you’re running, if you can’t get fuel out of the tank, it’s not going to run.

My understanding is that the gerotor intake pump is different between Dodge/Ram and Industrial/Duramax applications. While the Dodge/Ram will run without a lift pump it’s not as efficient at pulling fuel as the Industrial/Duramax.

I don’t know if the Industrial and Duramax ones use exact same gerotor or not

All of our QSB's have externally mounted lift pumps.

What is the fuel filter change procedure? Do they call out the cycling of the ignition?

Some CP3 pumps have a larger built in "lift pump" on the rear of the pump. The pump used on our trucks can pull about 18" of vacuum if I recall correctly. I would assume the pumps with the large external lift pump are designed to replace a traditional external lift pump as we know it on our trucks.

The electric lift pump is more or less a consumer product as if you run out of fuel it primes the system without interference from the user.
Commercial stuff has a higher approach for the driver's knowledge about how to deal with problems that can occur if it is driven dry.

Old story short, Mercedes built their first CRDs without a lift pump, just the CP3. Which ended with a lot of warranty claims for burnt up starters and CP3s as the manual stated - just crank the engine till it starts.
Well they learned their lesson an came back with the electric lift pump that eliminated all that.

The Dmax keeps getting mentioned, the LLY's have a primer pump on the filter housing to make up for the lack of a pump. I would imagine anything with out a LP would have to have some way of priming the system aside from just cranking....

It sure wasn't meant as anything personal?
I was only providing one example of how my experiences have been very different from yours.
That's all, Ozy.

International wants your business...no how to's, just need to's. I can get a subscription, not. But, the folks at International dealer here don't mind pulling info up. I'm going to trace fuel lines and find where they go. Lots of differences between Cummins commercial and Cummins Ram engines. Highest rated Cummins commercial is 360HP/800TQ. Mine has 325/750 in the MH.

Thanks, Ron

Hmmm. And here I was hoping for a better sun screen when the next 9150 comes in next month. Where have my priorities been? :D

Ron, If you get a chance have a good look at your filter housing. That should tell you whether or not you have one (lift pump) by the presence (or absence) of a primer/plunger.

Thanks! This uses a Fleetguard Nano fuel filter, so it's a bit different then my Ram. I had to take today and probably tomorrow off, but Monday, I'll check it out. Have to rest my back (spine). Cheers, Ron

Sorry J
Wasn't my day, there are days were my skin is really thin.
With my post I meant more to say that there are no consumer vehicles without a lift pump anymore, but commercial can be without, but with a manual prime pump instead. Not that there are no commercials with lift pump.
