Hey guys, I'm looking for a bit of input between these two axle ratios with the newer G56 in the 6. 7 trucks. The truck will be an all around do-it-all truck, it will see general unloaded commutes, occasionally tow upwards of 10,000lbs, as well as some off-road driving. Are the newer engines a little more RPM happy than the old 12valves I'm used to? I know with my '95, I have the 5spd NV4500 and 3. 54 rear end, its a good combination with 33" tires on it, but I think the 4. 10s would be too steep for the highway driving portions. But, then again with these 12 valves they sound like their going to fly apart above 2000rpm. The reason I ask is I thought I was settled on only considering the 3. 73s but I came across an 08 3500SRW with the 4. 10s in it out of town and I'm not sure if I should go look at it or just look for one locally with the 3. 73s in it:confused:

newer engines are definately more rev happy, but a 6. 7 won't be lacking down low...

I have an '04 with 4. 10's and 35" tires, and I couldn't imagine running any shorter gears.

I think 3. 73's and 33's would be ideal.

but, I also have a 98 12v, and I cruise on the highway at 2500rpm... certainly doesn't sound like it's going to fly apart

Go with 3. 73 gears to save youself a little diesel when commuting. That rear end will do what ever you need.

I can't imagine what my RPM would be if I had 4. 10's on my trucks, I still look for 7th gear as it is with 3. 73's. The RPM at 70 is about 2050 RPM and works for me, just wish the old Dana 3. 54 was still available. I just registered my C&C for 26K pounds and will find out in about 50K miles if it was a good choice to have the 3. 73, my only fear is the grades at max GCVWR at 26K. I ordered the truck that way and I'm not too worried about it, but if I blow it out I will change it out with an old Dana axle rebuilt for towing heavy.

The reason for the 3. 73 is because during the summer I do HVAC, and will drive many city miles. I ordered it when Diesel was only $2. 79 a gallon, I guess it was good timing. My 2500 came with the 3. 73, a truck that some one else ordered and I had no control of, but I don't tow that heavy with the 2500.

Too answer your question on which ratio is best with the G56, for general purpose the 3. 73 is perfect. I might consider an auto which has better RPM with the Aisin and 68RFE in the future, but will wait until they are proven with real miles and real people. The RPM's are a lot better in the fact they run lower RPM.

Steve...

Thanks everyone for the input and for confirming my original thoughts. I'll hold out for the 3. 73 rear end.

Forrest, the old girl does not like to go above 2200rpm, it sounds like all 6 squirrels are holding a riot in there at that RPM. My father's 97 does not sound as bad, perhaps its the lack of insulation on my truck that makes it sound worse than it is.

my '07 is geared just fine, I tow 10,000lbs all the time. if I were going to a G56 (which I might well do) I think I'd go with the 3:42. Looks like it would be gearded about th same as my '01 with NV5600 & 3:55.

I can tell you what it is like ... you can't go too fast (75mph is my max. , but I don't go over 70 mph ever), but I can tell you, you feel you can pull a mountain behind you. The 4. 10's in my truck are the shortest I could get. 4. 44 and 4. 88 were an option ... now those I find hard to imagin driving with the G56.

as klenger says the 4. 10 isn't a option with the G56 so 4. 10 are a moot point. Great tow transmission for folks that use a truck to haul heavy. If your just playing at towing get a set of taller tires.

Well I guess the dealer made a mistake then because he printed VIN info and it is an 08, with 6spd manual and a 4. 10 rear end. Must be a glitch in the system or who knows what?????

Maybe its a Canadian option? I'm on the Dodge build your truck website and its allowing the G56 with the 4. 10 so this is two sources saying that a 4. 10 can be paired behind a G56, so maybe there is more to it than it simply not being an option:confused:

probably so... I've cruised at 3000rpm for close to an hour once (I was in a hurry! )

the 5" straight pipe makes some noise, but the engine sounds nice and smooth :)

The 4. 10 is an option on the 08 G56 trucks. I test drove one when I was getting ready to buy mine but decided to stick with the 3. 73.

My guess is that because of the new gear ratios in the G56 for 2008, that they are now offering the 4. 10s with it. Sorry for my previous misinformation.

Stranger yet

Well, I just went to build a 3500 (pickup, not C&C) on Dodge and when I select 4:10, it replaces the manual with an auto. So, I called my local dealer and he confirmed, no 4:10's with the manual.

Why the conflicting reports???

Well, I am looking for one of the new 6speed autos with 4. 10 gears, they are very scarce. I have found a couple in Arizona. I can find the 6 speed manual with 4. 10 gears EVERYWHERE. I am not sure I want a manual though.

I really need to drive one. My need is that I retire in a couple of months and will be towing my 16000 fifth wheel trailer full time. The 3. 73 gears are not rated for that much weight.
