Actually, I did. I originally waited for a Duramax/Suburban, but GM for some strange reason was in no hurry to bring it to market. Dodge has no "Suburban/Excursion", and so I bought the only one currently produced... the Ford. I waited for the 2004 model year, as there were many revisions to the 6. 0. Glad I did!

Anyway, so far it has been fine. The TorqShift is a nice transmission, and the engine runs well. The steering is more like my 97 Dodge, but I can live with it.

That said, my '03 H/O, or my 97 1 Ton both have more grunt.

If Dodge built a "Suburban/Excursan", and put a 5 speed automatic behind the Cummins, I would trade for one tomorrow.

I think my '03 Dodge is the better overall truck.

Ford will imitate the Dodge front suspension in '05, and also the

brakes and 17" wheels.

Oh,

Looking at the original post.

The Ford guys that I hot Shot with say that Ford has the problems sorted out???

Many of these guys are still running the 7. 3 though. Ford should be really upset with themselves and International for letting these problems get to production. I don't think Ford is real happy with International at all.

I was trying to think of anyone that I know that Hot Shots a 1 ton Chevy (Duramax) and I can't think of one at all. I do know a guy with a 2500 Chevy and Duramax but he doesn't haul anything over 6000 lbs. The guys that work trucks very hard are not buying them yet but the Chevy dealers that I talked with before buying my Dodge will try to tell you differently. For the life of me I cant understand why Chevy didn't use The proven INLINE 6 CYLINDER ISUZU.

Ford has been the number one seller of trucks for many years, so much of their sales must come from repeat buyers. They are also the number one supplier of fleet vehicles, most companies just keep on doing the same old thing, and n this case that means ordering Ford trucks. Also most believe that there is no BIG THREE in America any more, Dodge is owned by a foreigne company, MB. This in most eyes leaves only Chevrolet and Ford as the American truck retailers. Just this week, they had some stats showing market gain and loss of all the automakers. Ford was still the most bought brand at 16. 8 % of all new vehicle sales, but they were down 18. 0% from a year ago. Chevy was getting closer at 15. 6,up from 14. 9%. Mean while Dodge was 7. 2%,and lost ground from last years 7. 9%. The most interesting thing was Toyota who's sales were up to 9. 9,with 9. 4% the year before, reported that in 2003 the company posted profits of 10. 24 Billion dollars!!!! Which is more profits then GM,Ford Motor Company,or Daimler Chrysler posted combined!!!

Sure Ford lost a few customers from it's problems with the 6. oL, several on this forum were previously Ford truck owners, but most seem content to stay with the big Blue oval. I am not a big anything fan, I bought my Cummins because it only came in a Dodge truck. To be honest, I first thoughts for a large truck were for a Ford. Dodge had not been to popular yet so I wasn't to sure how the relationship would workout, I had seen a few Cummins diesels and loved them so I gave it a shot. It turned out much better then I had thought, I have made many changes but none were because of failure. Sure their are afew flaws, every make has them, but overall I feel I got my money's worth.

I almost bought a Ford because of problems on my 01. 5 and the factory rep being a real arrogant . . .

The wife commented that the Ford just does not look like a $40K on the inside. Joe Donnelly's article on the 600 swayed me to take another chance on Dodge. VERY GLAD I DID.

Have you ever seen numbers of just 1/2, 3/4 and 1 ton trucks for Ford? I have thought for some time that Ford can claim the number one based on the fact that they sell so many different platforms 450, 550, etc and that the competition is less on those larger platforms. I may have my head in the sand, but it is a theory. Dodge certainly does not compete in that arena. Just ask the folks at earthroamer. I wonder if GM's numbers are not boosted in similar fashion, so that the gross sales numbers don't tell the whole story.

Whacha think guys?

With a torqueshift yes with a manual transmission no freakin way. I have put 41,000 miles on my work truck with the six speed and it is pitiful until 1800 rpm. My son has a 6. 0 with the torque shift and it,s pretty nice. I love manual trannies so it's Cummins for me.

Nope! I can name everything under my hood that I can point to. Under a Ford hood, there's so much unnecessary, ( well, maybe it's necessary for Ford ), crap, if you look long enough and hard enough, you'll see the engine. Part of it, anyway.

I spent several minutes locating the valve covers on the 6. 0. I like to work on my truck and that makes it really difficult. It wasnt ready for market. The 7. 3 was better but had ongoing problems and ford left em to the wind. If I had my pick I would take the 7. 3. I wouldnt touch the 6. 0 with a ten foot pole. I like the superdutys but would not give up my inline 6 cummins if I have a choice. If I had more money than I knew what to do with I would buy a 6. 0 lemon and convert it to a cummins.

I agree Big Daddy. I wouldn't mind having a F-450 or F-550 Cab and Chassis Ford but I couldn't even see the dam motor in the thing. I would have bought it if it had been Cummins powered. Inline 6 is the way to go. That's why I can't believe Chrevrolet didn't use the proven in-line 6 from Isuzu found in there little cab and chassis trucks. Maybe it wouldn't pass emissions or something.

They probably passed on the I6 engine because 'It's a Chevy so it's got to be a V-8'

As for chevy, I know a guy (poor guy) put (5) 2004 duramax, 4wd, six pack dually's on order for his brand new boat hauling business. He got the first one, put all the bells and whistles on it, (no performance upgrades) and hauled one boat from Texas to R. I. , his next trip was from Texas to CA. With only 16,000 miles on his truck I nuked an injector and tore up the valve train on the left bank off the motor. He got it hauled to the nearest dealer and waited on parts for 15 days. Finally he got a rental car and drove back to TX. Come to find out, GM had not stocked their parts departments with parts to the new "LYL code" Duramax diesel. His truck sat out in CA for exactly one month, when he got word he could pick it up he headed out to Cali in his second Duramax. He put the new one on the trailer and hooked up to the truck that just came out of the shop, it lasted 100 miles and blew the turbo up. He called the dealer, and they told him they had noticed something wrong with it but thought it "was just the nature of the beast". Now his first one is back in the shop and his number two truck is'nt even ready to haul. I do know he is filing a claim under "lemon law" for the first truck. This OBVIOUSLY does not leave a good taste in my mouth about GM and the "new" Duramax.

Oh, and no I would'nt buy a 6. 0 either, I like stick trucks and thiers are gutless as many others have said.

After driving the PSD and Duramax, I bought the dodge... Because I didnt like the feeling of a high revving gasser type motor that just requires diesel fuel.

I recently had the opportunity to spec a Powerstroke in our new medical rescue squad on the VFD. The only truck out there that is "pickup" sized but carries some serious payload is the F-Superdutys. I opted for a F550 4x4 with the V10. Not only did it save us some serious cash... but it saved us some future headaches (I think).

Now before everyone starts telling me how a diesel is better in an emergency apparatus... its too late as we took delivery last week. The diesel/gas dillema was well thought out and it was determined we can do what is needed with a gas engine. Basically... drive to and from peoples houses while carrying some equipment on board. The Triton V10 was too proven at this point to go with a 6. 0.

Had Ford still offered the 7. 3 PSD it might have been different. Our township VFD has two 450's... both with 6. 0's. There is a tremendous difference in the seat of the pants power from both. The early 03 actually feels stronger than the 04. To date neither truck has caused them problems but the miles are not racked up too fast either.

if ford would put a 6. 0 with the slushbox in a f150 crew cab/ 5' bed sport truck with awd, that would be fun and i would like to own one. i'd rather have it with a manual trans, but the engine is guttless in ford trim down low. in navistar trim, there is ±300lbs/ft torque at idle like the 3rd gen cummins engines.

Own one

I just bought an 04 excursion with the 6. 0 and have been pretty happy with it thus far. I'd be lying if I didn't say I was a little worried it will have problems. I install the Superchips program and it really takes off. Not like my truck but it can hold it's own. I'd say a good race for guy's that run DD3's and a comp. I'll say one thing for it, it sure pulls my boat nice. Maybe the extra weight in the backend. For what it's worth. Wish me luck.
