Hi fellas. Just traded the vette in on an 09 with 3k miles. Dealer says all I have is the remaining warranty from the 3/36. Of course they wanted to sell me an extended warranty when doing the paperwork. I told them I would get back to them. Should I get it??? or no... ... I am sunk into this truck for at least 5 years... . Thanks..... ray

My experience is that they are not worth it. The cummins engine has 5 year 100,000 on it. The emissions are also longer than the 3/36 but I am not sure what the warranty is on those. It should all be in the owners manual or a seperate warranty manual that should come with the truck. If the manuals are missing the dealer should supply them for you.

I have never bought one and never regretted my decision. Buy a good product, service it properly and it will be reliable.

I think the issue is whether you intend to own the truck outside the factory 3/36 bumper to bumper. If so, then you're "Self-Insuring" on everything other than the drivetrain -- which is the strongest aspect of these trucks anyway.

On my 3rd gen, after I got past 3 years, I replaced my AC compressor, blower motor, evaporator, turn signal switch, driver door electric lock, and other stuff I can't even remember. All on the $1200 MaxCare 7/70,000 plan with $0. 00 deductible AND free rental car. I just cancelled this contract when I got the new 2010 AND am (get this) entitled to a $518 partial refund as the truck is 5 years old with 43,000 miles. They don't consider how much they paid out ($4k) in repairs when calculating a partial refund.

You bet I'm getting the same plan on this 2010, buy it online at a great discount and enjoy the free rental car for maintenance until the plan kicks in after I'm out of warranty.

So my point is, although I'm generally against extended warranties, this is a special case and really depends on whether you're going to be owning outside the 3/36,000. The drivetrain is the least of it, IMHO.

Good luck!

Most of the plans that I have seen here, are power train coverage only. Bumper to bumper coverage is huge $$$. Extended warranty is insurance after all and as such is only as good as the company providing the coverage. I am a long term owner and a high mileage driver by average standards - 45 to 50,000 KMs per year. I plan on keeping this truck for 10 to 15 years. I maintain them well, drive them hard but I have never had a major component failure. Touch wood! I have put in excess of 300,000 KMs on several Dodge trucks (a couple with over 400,000) and other Mopars in the past. I don't see why this one won't do 500,000 plus before I'm done with it.

I own 4 of these trucks... all now have over 100K miles... they are out of the factory warranty and would be out of the extended warranty if we'd bought them... Other than normal maintenance we've not see over $1000 in repairs on all of them combined. .

So an extended warranty on one of them would have been money out the window, let alone all 4 of them...

jelag, can you compare that to your Ford expenses, just food for thought, thats an extended warranty well worth your money. :-laf

I guess that's the point. It depends on your use and particular situation. I'm usually 100% against extended warranties. This particular situation, with my use / miles and this particular warranty (no other), the Genuine Chrysler Service Contract / Max Care plan is worth it. But it's almost a perfect storm. Otherwise, I'm not the side of the naysayers!

Remember we keep a truck for 500K miles... . so during that time we'd have to buy several extended warranties as we'd be out of the mileage limit in no time... .

On the Fords it was cam position sensors, and their connections... . Injectors, and the wiring harness inside the valve covers that go to the injectors... and U-Joints... dual mass flywheels...

We found after who knows how many injectors that the stock Rycor filter under the Rycor name, Donaldson, Ford, and IH were the same filter that would stop water from passing the filter. . it would plug before it would pass water... . On the other hand, the NAPA Gold, Wix, and like 3 other manufacturers would pass water and damage the injectors... I went back on NAPA for their Napa Gold (wix) filter, sent in 3 injectors and labor claim based on their statement in their catalog about protection as good as the OE product... . they declined the warranty and within 30 days had pulled all the old style filters (wix) from the shelves and were now putting the Rycor in the box under a new part number... I'm sure we were just the tip of the iceberg so to speak. . but that repair alone was something like $2300. 00 but finally on the 3rd or 4th generation of wiring harness and gaskets, and the use of a better filter we finally got that part of the costs under control... .

We must have averaged 2-3 injectors per year, per truck... and of course they wouldn't die at home.....

When the move to Dodges was made we installed a 10 micron filter and a 2 micron secondary filter on all the trucks including a large Cummins and CAT in big trucks...

But the key with extended warranties is the limited mileage... let me give you an example, you can buy from Honda a 4 year unlimited mileage warranty on a GL1800 Goldwing for something like $200. 00 and this is over and above the 3 year factory warranty... so you can have coverage for a total of 7 years..... this is a no brainer... You can't even start to open one of these engines or transmissions for under a $1000 but look at it the other way... . Honda is so convinced that you won't have a problem that they've put the price so low everyone buys it..... and of course in 60K miles and 7 years I've never used it... .

The extended warranty I bought through the dealer is fully refundable, if I never use it. So, if in 6 years I'm thinking about using it, I wll have to weigh the cost of the repair versus the warranty refund.
Call it not so cheap insurance.

I agree 100% Jim. That's why it depends on the usage both in miles and years... High mileage drivers probably won't benefit from any extended policy. They'll drive right through it. Low mileage / high year owners (minority, I know!) like me are on the other end of the spectrum.

The only trouble I have had with my 03 is 5 radios and one amp. I was very glad I took the Chrysler warranty it has saved me a lot of money. I took the 7year bumper to bumper full cover so I have not ben out one penny. Jest look what a radios cost then the amp plus the cost of labor each time.

If you do decide to buy one, I'd suggest you don't buy it from your local dealer but rather from another dealer out-of-state. That way you save on the tax. I did that with my Ford extended warranty (which I definitely needed) and it saved me several hundred dollars.

It's like an insurance policy, It isn't worth anything until you need it. History, a year ago we traded our Liberty CRD for a 07. 5 with a 6. 7L it had about 50K I bought the best warranty I could. 10K and trips to NV and then to FL problems occurred. Instrument lights went out--blown fuse---shorted instrument cluster---COVERED. Transmission lines leaking --COVERED. Check engine light flashed on for 300+ miles then went out--EGR valve, cooler, and turbo required flushing--Covered. rental car authorized--covered. Total covered around $1600 less deductable. This is the first third party warranty that i have had that was worth a darn. This was with the dealership I got the truck from. So like I said in the beginning it isn't worth anything until you need it. happy driving
