Would you use a set of plastic ramps under your truck?

The other day, I was browsing through a Quality Farm and Fleet store. In the automotive department, I ran across a set of plastic ramps that claimed they would support 7,000# (I think thats the right figure). Would you guys trust those ramps under your truck?

Think they would be OK as long as you didn't put a torch to them by accident.



Anymore composites can be made to be stronger and lighter than metals.

First. I would have to see how they are constructed. I have metal ones and I insert a block under the ramp part as the front end is pretty heavy. Under no conditions would I crawl under without a beefy set of Jack stands. I have not had much luck with anything plactic!!

I have no use for ramps, there is really nothing i cant do under the truck while it is sitting on the ground.

I'm going with EMD on this one, Doc! Why use ramps when you can crawl right under there without them? You can actually sit up under the rear end.



Of course, for those "pesky" 2WDs, better get some ramps!

Doc you don't need ramps!!! You need 4 wheel Drive !!! I have a problem with it to tall!! when I change the oil I have to jack the drain pan up in the air, because if theres any wind at all Oil goes every where!!



P. S. Doc I have a pair of Metal ramps you can have if you what them, I would feel better knowing that

your under your truck with safe metal ramps!! I send them to you towmorrow!!

I have been looking a new set of ramps. The last set of metal ones collapsed. the plastic ones look pretty beefy, and have mucho bracing underneath. I still will put a set of stands under the frame and choke the wheels and set the e-brake. Does anyone actually have the plastics? Besides, a $100 set of ramps is WAY cheaper than 4wd

My dad has these for his GMC Sub-human. They hold 12,000 lbs.

They should definitely take care of you without collapsing.

SCooke - How much do those weigh? Would each one be less than 15#?

I'm not sure exactly how much they weigh, but they are DEFINITELY less than 15 lbs. a piece. My guess would be 5-8lbs. They are super-strong and lightweight. Good price too.

doc, just put it on the ramps you have where you used to work. surely if they can hold a buss, they can hold your 1 wheel drive low rider up

Boy am I careful around vehicles that are jacked up on stands, or on ramps. We had a fellow pilot at the airline I work at who died under his car when it fell off of whatever was supporting it. His wife found him at 2am when she realized he hadn't come to bed after working on the car.



Whatever you use, make sure it's STRONG!

I own a set of platic ramps... . my 2500 4x4 collapsed my metal ones.



That was some funny feeling, know I should be driving UP... a ramp... and instead getting this sinking feeling as I drove "UP" the ramps. I'm glad it happen how it did.



The plastic ones that I bought from my local shop are engineered really well. Every square inch (literally) is supported. There's a very heavy boxed web support struction that transmits the load from the ramp surface to the ground.



Solid sides, unlike the metal ones that can spread.



After owning these for the last two years, I wouldn't buy another set of metal ramps again.

Plastic is STRONG!!!

I park my Lance camper on an inclined driveway. To level things out for loading/unloading the camper, I went to WalMart and bought a set of plastic ramps. I use them under the front of the truck. I have the front axle weight with camper at home, but it is a helluva lot. Never had a problem with them, they don't slip, creek, and with that much weight on 'em they do the job well!!!

Does the selfpreservation side of you think about the weight of your ram re-forming the pressed formed steel ramps?

My ram did that... .

It was just a matter of time... and of course the weight of that great 6 banger of ours... .

My metal ramps spent years with all sorts of other vans and 4x4s on and off of them..... the ISB powered ram was just tooo much... .



Like a few other said... safety jacks, cause you just never know...
