Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) WTB 97 canister style fuel filter housing / assembly

The canister for the fuel filter housing on my wife's 97 broke. Dodge and Cummins have discontinued this part. I am calling around to junkyards and have been unsuccessful in finding a replacement. Are earlier or later models direct replacements? solutions?

IIRC my early 98 is the same.
Mine is a biotch to get to, I'd consider changing it entirely if mine were to break.
What exactly broke? The plastic lever assembly?

I've done the Geno's conversion on my '98, and am well pleased with it, after using it for a couple of years. However, I wish to get rid of the water-in-fuel sensor. It makes the removal and installation difficult for clearance on my truck. I have no use for this sensor, and the possible leaks around it. I'd like to find another straight filter element replacement without a hole in the bottom, or a blanking plug for the FS 1253 filter. Any ideas?

For you guys with the Genos Garage conversion, is the filter smaller diameter than the canister in these trucks?

Reason I ask is that if the canister were just 1/4" smaller in diameter I would be able to pull it out from the top of my engine bay instead of contorting and dropping it out the bottom. And I'd really like to be able to just pull it through the top.
