Well, It looks as though due to the great election, Liberal WI is finally going to get concealed carry. Actually, if all goes well, we will get constitutional carry, which basically means that it you can legally own, you can carry any way you want. I'm a 45acp nut and have been reading a lot about the XDM 45. Does anyone have one and if so how many rounds through it? All the write ups are positive and I love the looks, striker trigger, adjustable grip and capacity. I'm just wondering what real life thoughts are.

Thanks,

Dave

I have shot my boss's Xdm 9mm, but not a . 45. I am a . 45 guy too, but I prefer the 1911 style.

Her Xdm shot really nice. It was her first pistol and she asked me to teach her to shoot it. Did not experience any malfunctions over about 500 rounds between the two of us. Her's was pretty accurate (if you knew how to shoot it). She was all over the target, and blamed the gun until I put 10 rounds in 1" at the same distance. That is when she decided she needed more practice. :-laf

Her's was a really nice pistol, and I don't see why the . 45 version would be any different. I just had a hard time getting used to the safety on the trigger. For some reason it really freaked me out.

There is a handgun show on Direct TV that is doing an ongoing torture test of an Xdm 9mm. Over the last few weeks, they have buried the same pistol in sand, mud, submerged in salt water, run over by a truck, drug behind the truck, thrown off a roof multiple times (these are just the episodes I have seen), and the same pistol always comes up shooting. If their . 45 is even half that tough, I don't think you would go wrong.

Congrats on getting Concealed Carry passed. Have you thought about a holster and belt combination?

Hope this helps.

I have an XD40(subcompact) not M but the XD. I'm not sure how many rounds are through it now but I used it as a carry for a while but it was just to bulky for me. I now just use that particular gun as a truck gun and it functions flawlessly every time. I recommend it highly.

I have an XD45 and have not shot an XDm45. The XD is only . 3 inches longer and the same height and width. With 13 round magazines you may find other pistols better suited for concealed carry. I open carry the XD but also have a Kahr PM45 and an inside the waistband holster for the Kahr. If you like the XD/XDm, you might consider the XD compact for concealed carry.

As I said, I haven't shot the XDm, but I've read about the differences and they may be important to you. I consider them nice to have, but not essential. The XDm will shoot and feed semi-wadcutter ammunition; the XD won't. I prefer the longer barrel of the XD. It's only half an inch, but on a 4. 5 inch barrel that is about 11%. May not be much difference with standard ammunition, but if you shoot +P or 45 Super you may appreciate it. After Springfield introduced the XDm, I bought some more XDs. (Won't say how many; might arouse the HSA goons. )

If you haven't been there yet, go to XD-45ACP Discussion Room - XDTalk Forums - Your XD/XD(m) Information Source! and XD-M Discussion Room - XD(M)™ - XDTalk Forums - Your XD/XD(m) Information Source!. You can find lots of opinions there.

If we get constitution carry, you can carry open or concealed so a bulge won't make it illegal. I shoot better with the bigger guns. I have a original 1911 colt (not 1911A10) and a EAA witness match. I like the capacity and the lack of other needed safeties with the trigger safety/striker system. God forbid I ever need it; fast, simple, reliable and lots of rounds sounds good to me. It'll be a little while, the wife seems to think one safe full is enough! But you can never have too many shoes?

Dave

I have a XDM . 40 and love it. I've had it for almost two years now and have had no issues. The . 40 holds 16 in the clip... and one in the hole. I don't remember what the . 45 holds. I can tell you my experience with my gun has been very pleasant and I would recommend it to anyone.

I don't have it anymore, but I've has several Springfield's, including a . 45 XDm. I really liked it, but gave it up for a partial trade on a rifle. Mine shot really well, and it's been my experience with Springfields, that they are well made. I prefer 1911s as well, but won't carry one due to the lack of safeties. I prefer a smaller 9mm as it tends to get in the way less. I've recently been using an old Makarov... . :D I only had one feeding problem with the . 45 XD, and I shot several hundred, perhaps thousand rounds... the Ultramax ammo with lead 230gr bullets didn't want to cycle all the time, but the way it fouled the action and smoked when shooting, I'm not going to blame that on the pistol. I don't think you'll regret the purchase if you buy it. For the money, they're one of the better mid-range pistols.

Rusting

I was talking to my cousin last night who lives in Boerne Texas. He said he had a XDM that he had used as a "truck gun". He had in the console for 2 weeks and noticed rust pits starting all over the slide. His glock that lives there all the time has never had an issue. That seems fast to me as if he got one that wasn't finished properly. I am always fighting humidity where I am and don't want to have to deal with that. Anyone else had one rust like this?

Dave

I'd be interested in what Springfield had to say about that. I'm picking up a 40 compact Thursday, and the thing that caught my eye was the killer deal they had on extra mags plus the lifetime guarantee. I didn't read the fine print on warranty, so they might call that type of stuff 'misuse'. I'd call 'em on it, and I'd personally be interested in the answer.

I never had any rust issues with any of mine. That seems odd to me. He may have had something that reacted with the finish on his hands at the time.....

My brother has an XD compact in . 45 ACP and it's a little finicky about ammo, specifically bullet profiles. It feeds 230 grain FMJ and Speer Gold Dots reliably, but doesn't like 200 grain SWCs at all. For some that may not be an issue, but for him it's a real bummer since he tends to shoot my handloads, and I load a lot of . 45 ammo using 200 grain SWCs.

My Springfield Mil-Spec and Sig P220 are much less finicky about ammo.

Was his a XD or XDM? I thought that the XDM's had a better feed ramp and are supposed to be less picky as to bullet profile.

I have an XD 45. I have only shot about 500 rounds factory ammo so far but I absolutely love it. no jams. Very accurate. I love the balance, feel, smoothness in the action and trigger pull. Built in safetys X 2 on trigger and grip but most of all... easy take down and easy to clean. My other favorite features were the cocking indicator with the exposed striker pin and the round in chamber indicator on top. I can always tell even in complete darkness that I am loaded, cocked and ready to go with no worries about getting a safety off. The sights are easy to use with fast target aquistion and consistent round placement. I feel real good about this weapon. A little large for CCW but I have a shoulder holster now that is better than the belt holster that came with the weapon. Buy one. You won't be sorry.

Bought it!

I broke down and bought one yesterday. I pick it up tomorrow due to the 48hr wait. I have been talking about it for quite a while. My wife hadn't said no, so I took that as a yes! She didn't seem to happy when she got home and found out. I have found that it is easier to ask forgiveness for not asking permission that asking permission and then forgiveness for ignoring her saying no! Works nearly every time! I'll try to put a couple hundred rounds this weekend and let ya know what I think.

Dave

Well, so far I love it. It is more accurate than I am. At 15 yards, I can put 12/13 in a 2 - 2 1/2" group. I seem to get one flyer that is about 2' outside the rest. The trigger is better than the glock's, but I foresee a trigger job in the future.

For a 1911 style, a gun I love is the EAA witness elite match. When I got mine 2 yrs ago, it was $525. Now I think they are just over $600. They are made by Tangfolio in Italy. They are the ones who make the CZ75. It looks and feels exactly like a 1911, except for the trigger. It has a standard pivot trigger instead of the 1911 pull back. When you get the match, it is the lowest grade that is hand fit and assembled in their custom shop. They were recommended to me from a pro shooter I know. He shoots their top gun in IPSC.

For personal carry and to some degree even a backup when hunting, the . 45 acp used to be at the top of list of preferences. That is until I got some time with a 10mm Glock 20. 15+1 shots of upto 1350 fps @ 782 ft. /lbs. from Buffalo Bore 180 grain hollow points.

You can step down in power and even make a VERY simple barrel change in about a 2 min. max. with a Lone Wolf 10-40 Lone Wolf barrel to a . 40 S&W.

Lone Wolf Distributors - Product Detail - LWD Barrel M/20 Conversion to 40 S&W Stock Length - $114. 95

If you wish to still shoot . 45 from that same gun, you can get a Lone Wolf . 45acp complete upper and fire . 45acp all you want. Just talk to their custom department.

With a Sprinco model 16374 Glock 20 / 21 COR-BON recoil reducer recoil spring:

and the Lone Wolf Carry Package Trigger Kit:

Lone Wolf Distributors - Product Detail - Lone Wolf Carry Package Trigger Kit - $17. 50

This makes for a very mild shooting gun with a nice smooth, crisp trigger pull and minimum recoil and muzzle flip. Very easy to hold on target while firing under nearly all conditions and positions.

The Glock is not the prettiest gun in the world and my personal preference is for double action DA and not double action only DAO.

Over, makes for a very good carry pistol that is in the power range between the . 41 Remington Magnum and . 44 Magnum.

Ammo can be a bit pricey but if you shop around you can find very reasonably priced training ammo and carry ammo is always high anyhow.

Anyhow, it is not a . 45 acp but thought I might throw out something else to consider.

The 10mm is one heck of a round. But, the ammo is one heck of a price! I like to shoot a lot, and $13/50rnds vs $27/20rnds puts it way out of my range. Also, I have a few thousand rnds of 45 already. The 38 super is making a comeback also, and that is a hot rnd in modern guns. For big bangs, I grab the Super Blackhawk out and crank out some 44 mags. That get's pricey as well, even with handloads, but is a lot of fun.

The glock isn't DAO, its a striker system that is completely different. The firing pin(striker) has a higher pressure spring and the trigger releases it instead of a hammer hitting the pin. There are less parts, and they are able to make them safer, as far as the safety of the weapon goes. Most of the time it's the idiot holding it that causes the problem. The downfall is that they normally have a crappy trigger. That is seen in Glocks, XDMs, and M&Ps. They have a long mushy pull. There are aftermarket kits that make them like a target trigger.
