It appears to me that it would be entirely feasible to replace the front output shaft seal w/o dropping the xfer case. It appears that there's plenty of room to work if a guy doesn't mind lying on his back for a few hours. :)

If this is possible, it sure would save lots of work.

Anybody attempted this?

Thanks,

Tim

Yes, actually I just done mine a few days ago. It wasn't to bad. Just took the constant velocity u-joint from the transfer case and tied it up out of the way. Removed nut, yoke and old seal and put it back together. The old seal on mine was lock tighted in so had to kinda mess up the old seal getting it out. My truck has the 241 transfer case so I used a NAPA #18771 seal. So far so good.

I only removed the skid plate and drained the transfer case. Not bad at all.

YEEESSS!

This is better than I had hoped. I wasn't sure if I could even get away w/o dropping the crossmember to replace the seal.

Thanks for the info!

front seal replaced

Took a day off and set about replacing the front shaft seal on the xfer case. Got 'er done, but it took all day! And man are my shoulders aching. Tomorrow might be a bad day. :)

The original seal on mine was loctited too. Totally destroyed it pulling it out. Tried a sheet metal screw through the metal portion and tugged on it with a slide hammer but just pulled the screw out.

I ended up putting a pipe wrench on the prop shaft so that I could tighten the flange to the yoke. I didn't want to, but couldn't find a way to tighten the flange to the yoke any other way. I padded the jaws of the pipe wrench and fortunately didn't hardly leave a mark on the shaft.

All I had to buy was a 1 1/8" socket to do the job. Already had the rest of the stuff I needed.

Could it be that my tool collection is finally where it belongs? :D Can it be?

A hearty thanks to those who took the time to respond to my original post!
