I'm at 5k now. I'm going on a long road trip and feel the need to change my black oil. My brain says trust Cummins and Ram and follow the EVIC..my heart says screw them, they didn't pay the suggested price of 67k..well, I didn't either but you get my point.

I need some moral support..words of encouragement?

With 5k how long is your trip?? you can go about anther 3k with no problems.. Although It will not hurt to change it early, especially with break in deposits, if you do not want to get it done on the road.

It's just an oil change........no need to over think it. Getting the first crankcase of oil out early, is not a bad idea. I did......

did mine at over 8K, mainly just cause I was bored. I wont do it again early after having to dismantle the entire right front corner of the engine just to replace the filter.

I would go ahead and engine change the oil now. I was in a similar dilemma in early Sept of this year with my truck; I know we would be putting on over 3500 miles on the truck as we drove to the east coast pulling our camper. I had only put on only 4,000 miles from the last oil change and would have to change the oil on the road at a dealership (will not trust a fast lube place). The last time I had an oil change at a dealership my cost for just an oil change and filter, no lubing was done, was $131.00 in June 09. My cost for an oil change doing the labor myself is around $62.00,Sept 2014 cost and I get to pick the oil I want; plus I know the front drive shaft gets grease along with the two other grease points at the wheels.

I had my first oil change done on my 2014 Tradesman at 3000 miles, to get rid of any breakin debris and oil. The only thing the dealership forgot to do was reset the Oil monitor on the EVIC. I did it once I got home with no problem.

Jim W. Where are the two fittings you said were by the wheels?
I know the one on the driveshaft, but not about any else.

On my 08 which has the 05 to 07 steering linkage and not the newer version the tie rods have a grease zerk at each end. I believe that Chrysler has eliminated this on the later trucks.

This was a discussion point with the dealership on my last oil change in 09 at the dealership. They would not grease these nor the driveshaft since their service rack did not have any greasing equipment at this quick lube rack. They want me in and out in under 20 mins; no way on a Ram truck with a Cummins engine in the truck.
