I have been told all my life that Statland (Americanized from Stotland) is Russian, but most old timers insist it is an old German name. Also, I am told that many Germans immigrated to the Ukrain in the 1800's to work ore mines and such. Question... How long does it take for a German name to become Russian? Humm! #ad

I'm an American. All of my ancestors came here in boats at the end of the 1800's and early 1900's from Finland.

My dad never knew a word of english until he went to grade school.

Mom learned Finnish first, as well, but her parents did speak english.

After my dad finished his service to the country in WWII, he headed out west (from the upper peninsula of Michigan) to find his fame and fortune, so to speak, and his mother still thought that the indians were in charge and he'd get killed by them...

Later in life, she did learn some english, but it was never good. I was barely able to understand her.

Finland was the only country in Europe to pay back it's WWII debt.

Finland has no national debt.

Parts of Finland are above the Arctic Circle, and have 24 hour night in the winter and 24 hour day in the summer.

Finland's most famous export to the US is the Sauna (Pronounced SOW nuh), and the real ones use a wood stove and can cook food in thier hotter parts.

My father's mom was also "black irish". Supposedly, When the spanish armada was detroyed by the british fleet and north sea storms, many a spanish sailor wound up in Scotland and Ireland. Haven't heard of any "black scots" though. Now on the east coast of England around the city of York, you would think you were in Sweden. Viking ancestry accounts for all of the blond hair and blue eyes. If anyone every gets the chance, rent a car and spend about two weeks in England, Wales and Scotland. Since both my dad and his mom are black haired, brown eyed and 'soft dark' skin, she being an O'Reilly, I found the that essay very interesting, but I think I could have gone for the book-of-the-month-club version.

Pedigree?

German - Scotch. Dad`s baptismal certificate is in German. They apparently held services in both German & English at that old church even still into the 1920`s. His ancestors came here during the potato famines of the 1840`s. On mom`s side, they been here a lot longer. She had some Torries in her closet. Also have some cousins buried at Coffeville , Kansas. They tried to make a bank withdrawl, unsuccessfully. :--)
