Does anyone know if the three o-rings inside the lift pump are replaceable. Im hunting air leaks and believe somebody here had a leaky primer button where one of the o-rings is located. Just wanted to know if anyone has replaced them instead of spending $184 on a lift pump!

Thanks

$184 is too much for a lift pump. I've heard $100 is the US for a pump. Up here in Canada I paid ~$150 at a CaseIH dealer. I took my pump apart and found the piston scored. I'd give you my old primer if you were close.

The price has gone up dramatically in the last 2-3 years. The best price I could find last year was $135 after lots of checking around on TDR & the web. Many were $160+

I would take the O-rings and shop around locally. I know there is no rebuild kit for the pump which is unfortunate.

Unscrew the push button and take off the large O-ring. Use it for a sample. NAPA has replacements in their O-ring box for about 50 cents each. The old one will be a little bit distorted so it won't look like it matches up. It's just an ordinary O-ring. All three of them are the same.

Search for some older posts by Joe G. He had success replacing the o-rings with new ones. When my lp started leaking (few yrs. ago) I tried that too. But it didn't stop the leaking. So I went to Cummins nearby and bought a new one. It was a Carter brand and a bit beefier that the oem one that leaked, I believe.

I'd try to fix it, but maybe buy a new one to have on hand. If you're lucky, you can just return the new lp.

I've had some leaks that I thought were the lift pump and were not. Make sure that the leak is not something that leaks on the lift pump. The input fitting to the fuel filter can leak. It drips on the lift pump. The WIF valve on the bottom of the fuel filter is the same way. So is the input fitting to the fuel heater/pre-filter assembly. They all drip on the lift pump.

My lift pump leaks when i go to prime it too. I am going to try the o-ring fix first. Is there just one oring on the primer button or three?

I removed the lift pump yesterday and took it apart tonight; I can’t find a single o-ring!!!!????? I have several schematic pictures of the lift pump parts and where the o-rings are located but none are there?? I found two washers between the pump body and the outlet & inlet caps, but they defiantly are made of steel and look just like washers. I’m clueless because the lift pump has never been taken apart before.

??????????????

Be aware that not all the pumps have the oring setup at the primer. Mine was not an oring. Mine had an oil seal down inside on the primer shaft and no other sealing device. I replaced it with a seal from Napa, but the plastic shaft was too scored to seal. I just put a pipe plug in the end and ran it that way til I got a new pump from Case/Ih for $88.

That's good to know. I guess they finally reacted to the push button O-ring failures. If mine leaks again I'll get one of the new type lift pumps.

Mine looks like yours, no o-ring at the primer. BUT, mine also doesn't have o-rings at the two other caps, is this normal?? The piston on mine is a little scored also but not enough to effect the performance. The only thing the concerns me is the leak around the primer button and mine doesn't have an o-ring to correct the leak. So I guess I need a new lift pump if I cant stop the leak. The $88 lift pump from Case IH sounds pretty good, are they really selling them that cheap??? Is it the Carter brand like the OE ones?

Hello. . You should have an oil seal where the pushrod enters the pump. I was able to get my primer from leaking by putting a couple of hose washers under the cap and using pip dope on the threads. This only held for awhile, then I put a new seal in it and took the primer out and capped it off til I got the new one. I am searching for a rebuild for these, we have a couple White tractors that have 6BT's in them. When I bought one the dealer rebuilt one of the lift pumps that was leaking before they delivered it. . And now that dealer is gone..... I know their is one out there... I bought that pump last spring and I have heard the price has gone up, but is certainly cheaper that Cummins... The Case/IH part number is J936317. Marc

I've been trying to fix a leaking primer bulb on mine today by replacing the o-ring. Looks like I'll have to get a new pump as the pump still won't prime. I've even scavenged primer plungers and orings from another used lift pump I have on hand. Has anyone come up with a rebuild kit?

There is no source for lift pump parts that I know. You may have an air leak somewhere that is preventing priming. The fuel heater is really bad for that. Email me at -- email address removed -- for my write up on the 12 valve fuel system, how it works and how to fix it.

Thanks for the reply Joe, and thanks for the help in past posts. I guess I didn't leave enough information in my last post- what started this was a leaking head gasket. I just replaced it, and tried to prime the fuel system with the primer 'bulb'. It was squirting fuel around the rubber plunger boot, and I could only get a small amount of fuel in the filter after quite a long time of priming, so I tried replacing the o-rings with NAPA ones, that didn't work. So I replaced the plunger and o-rings with parts from another old lift pump I'd replaced on another truck(I rarely throw parts away, no matter how bad they are. LOL)

Well the old parts didn't work, and since removing the starter and fuel pump multiple times started to wear on my patience, I replaced it with a new one from O'Reilly auto parts. It says it's an Airtex on the package and computer, but there was a Carter pump in the box- total of 153. 00 after tax. That was the cheapest I could find at any of the chain parts houses- didn't check with cummins or dodge.

So, now the primer plunger is working, just got the truck running a few minutes ago. It's a shame we can't rebuild these pumps- they're not real complex. I did find a thread that mentioned a part number for a rebuild kit from cummins, but it is for the C series, and apparently no one has been able to get the kit from cummins. I'll post a link to the thread if I can recall which one it was.

BTW, after reading your advice Joe, and nearly having a meltdown on one of my trucks, we've removed the fuel heater or otherwise disabled it on all 6 of our CTD trucks. I have received your fuel system write up, and it has proven helpful- thanks Joe!

I am fairly sure that the plunger o-ring was causing my problems, and not an air leak somewhere else- it had shown no fuel system symptoms in the recent past. I don't think the pump is bad, but the o-ring just didn't seem to help for me...
