I just got my smarty couple weeks ago and finally gotten around to driving my truck with a catcher loaded. I scanned for DTC's before I loaded a catcher software and there was only 1 the intake air heater (which I removed and put a spacer in instead). Now ever since I loaded a catcher program, even after returning everything to stock, I still get 2 codes contantly. I am wondering if these codes are smarty related or is my (6,000 mile) HRVP44 sick. The codes are:

P0216: Fuel Injector Pump Timing Failure

P0602: ECM Fueling Calibration Error

I am guessing that the ECM fueling calibration error is directly from smarty programming, but the fuel injector pump timing failure worries me a little.

Is it ok to reset these codes, or do I need to get my truck checked out? I am scarred of timing being stuck too aggressive.

Also, the truck has tendancy to die momentarily every once in awhile and then catch itself right away, kinda like a hesitation of some sort. If I give a couple short burps of throttle, the truck hiccups usually on the 3 or 4 blip of the throttle. Also sometimes when I step on the throttle and let go right away, the truck lurches ahead like I put my foot back into it for a second. I thought it might just be getting too much fuel down low, but it does this more on the lower settings than the higher settings. I am guessing that these could be common traits of smarty on 2nd gens. Other than that I am pretty happy with the smarty, but it still feels like it is defueling past 2700rpm; especially when going around 90 mph. The whole reason I bought the smarty was because I heard that they are coming out with a hot catcher that fuels to 4000rpm and totally eliminates defueling 100% and is supposed to be a free upgrade to smarty owners. So smarty guy out there, please, please, please come out with the fueling to 4000rpm catcher soon!! Me and many more 2nd gen smarty owners are eagerly awaiting the promises of new catcher softwares to be released.

0216 is the common vp44 failure code. What you got is a dead pump you may as well order a new one asap.

Just scanned the truck again, only got the Intake Air Heater code. Now I am a little bit worried... . do these codes come and go, or do they usually remain constant? I haven't cleared the codes with the smarty, they just didn't show up this time.

Me and a couple of other Smarty users experienced the same thing - the 602 is a harmless code caused by the extra fueling Smarty provides - they all will get that one. The 216 code reveals the weakness of the VP-44 - the Smarty program may slightly magnify the pumps weakness and cause it to reveal itself - but is NOT the cause of the problem - it was already there BEFORE Smarty arrived!

Start saving your $$$, because a new VP-44 is surely on your horizon! But take heart - the latest rebuilt VP-44's revisions seem to have made them FAR more reliable than those more than a couple of years ago, so the next one will likely be your last!

Yeah, but this HRVP44 is only 10 months old! Not even 10,000miles. After this one goes, I will try one more VP, then it will be p-pump time. In the meantime, I will check for codes to see if this ugly 216 number pops its head up again. This time at least, I have the right guy for the installation, the last guy screwed up my lines, and I had to replace them.

I got the p0216 after a few months with the smarty.

It would not occur with the stock program.

I could get the Code to set ' quickly' with sw3 by pushing it to 3000 rpm.
also got 1 incident of dead pedal doing this.

BUT: I had ~ 70k miles on an original VP44(brass advance cylinder)
The rebuilt VP44 now has ~5K miles, no problems on Fuel saver or sw3,sw5.

Sorry for your troubles.

In my case I got 0216 and 1693. I had just checked for codes when I was changing a Smarty SW, out of habit. I reset the 0216 code, but it kept coming back. Sometimes in a day or two, sometimes before I got out of the drive way. That and a couple of dead peddle episodes was enough for me. Mine had about 52k on the clock IIRC.
