By pass oil filter

I have been doing some reading on these since I changed my oil over to Amsoil last month. I plan on extended oil changes in the future. I have read that cummins does not recomend using a bypass filter with the 5. 9. My question is, do I really need one to keep the oil in good shape for several thousand miles? Will just changing the stratapore filter every 3000 miles and topping off the oil be good enough? Just figured I'd ask and make sure it was money well spent. I have also figured I could put a bypass sytem together myself with off the shelf parts.

Been running Amsoil for about the last 173k now. Have 193k on the truck now. Change the 16035 filter every 10-12k, top off, then run another 10-12k and dump everything. Engine is still spotless inside. My . 02 How many and what type of miles do you put on your rig?

I drive about 10-15k a year. Mostly freeway driving. A once per year oil change is what I'm looking for.

do on oil analysis for the first time you're doing the extended oil change (like after 3000, then 6000, etc They will actually tell you if you let them know about your plan. They will say test again in X miles, for instance)

They have a lot of stuff here (search posts for oil bypass or extended oil change etc. ) Bob is the oil guy has some stuff too. Bob Is The Oil Guy

I'm kinda looking at the 'toilet paper' filters, the Frantz. They aren't for everybody (you have to change the roll at 3000 miles I think) but they filter well from what I understand. I guess it's real easy and fast to change the roll (you have to top off the oil, but you're adding some additives that have been used up anyway)

Slingblade, I had put an Amsoil bypass on my 04, and had mounted it on the frame. Then I bought the engine mount and was going to mount it up there. I never got around to putting it back on. I think that with 238,000 mi on the rig, I am not going to bother putting it on. Moral of the story is, I will sell you the whole setup for half the price of new, complete with the instructions, if you desire. pm me if you are interested.

I called amsoil & ask why they did`nt recommend it on the newer trucks,& the response was because on some trucks it was dropping the oil pressure a little & on others it caused aslight fluctuation . Had one on my 01 & never had a problem. It did drop pressure a little, but when I checked it on top of oil filter housing with a live gauge it was well above what the gauge showed. Just received info about the fs2500 & looks very impressive. Anyone got any feedback on this system ?

I run a Gulf Coast... before that it was an Amsoil BMK-11.



Their feedback is for the dual remote system, not the stand-alone BMK-11. The BMK-11 doesn't affect engine oil pressure in the least. They should have told you to run the stand-alone BMK-11.



IMO, anyone with a 3rd gen truck (and those with reflashed 2nd gens) should probably run an aftermarket oil pressure guage, since the OE guage is simulated by the ECM and not a true reading.



As for the FS2500, there are a lot of guys running them... never really saw a downside to them other than initial cost. They look like they mount quite well...

If you want the Amsoil By-pass, use their BMK-11 mount with the EaBP-100 filter element. It does not drop the oil pressure, as Steve pointed out. If you don't install a By-pass, and just change the oil each year using the Amsoil Engine oil, that's fine too, as they do recommend that when using their oil/with their "FULL_FLOW" filters.



I utilize the BMK-11 and the 15W-40 HDD&Marine oil, and have not pulled the plug for nearly 80,000 miles and over 4 years. Does a great job.

I just started running the fs-2500 unit and like it so far. I have had one analysis so far that look good. Just trying to slowly extend my intervals too.

I have a FS2500 and I love it. I run synthetic oil and I have had 3 oil samples look at from the lab and all were excellent. 12K Great 18K Great 22,500 Great. I change the filter every 6K and top it off. I have pulled the valve cover and it is spotless. Yes the FS2500 is expensive, but get one in you hand and you will see the quality of the product.

Personally, it has saved me a bunch of money from the 5K oil change regiment I was doing. In short? Highly recommend
