I am looking at installing a set of 285/70/17 Silent Armors. I was wondering if anyone has these? Good, Bad? I got a price of $753 OTD!!! I am not a big Goodyear fan but for the price and a 50,000 mile warranty I think I might try them. These are Pro Grade tires Load range D and rated a 3195. Not trying to start a debate over D and E tires just looking for input:-{} I also looked at Revo's, BFG'S,Firestone's, but for the money I think I would go this way. I was also wondering is 285's a smart move or should I stay with 265? I have a price of $680 OTD on these!! The Goodyear store has some sale going on till the next Tuesday. I think the prices are great and I have them in writing!!
 
I can't comment on the Goodyear tires as they don't make the 315's yet in the silent armors. But I found the Cooper Discover to be a great tire for the price They wear well and are not loud.
 
I have the exact tire you are looking at... ... same size and all... ... they are an EXCELLENT tire, depending on where you live..... and that is even a better price. retail is around 280 a tire. I went up the 2 sizes as well and saved me some mpg (currently averaging 22 - 24). They are great on snow and ice. I got them cause i plowed when i was living in chicago. Never turned a tire. The one thing i found now, living 5 miles down a gravel road is that they dont like gravel. It eats them up pretty good. Other than that they are great. Nothing like the regular Wrangler tires. I've done some research on the Silent Armors myself and everything that I've found is very positive about them. I'm running BFG's with 52K on them and I'm due for a new set of tires. I've run the BFG's for the last 15 years and have considered them a very good 4x4 tire. I've never been a fan of the Goodyear Wranglers either, but I have been seriously considering trying a set of the Silent Armors. I've seen the old style Goodyear AT/S that I think is now the Silent Armors go over 40K miles on county run 2500 4x4 suburbans. Good traction in the snow too.



I was surprised to see that my new 04. 5 still has the original Michelin LTX A/S

265 70 17. 53K miles and still has some tread to go!
 
I have that same tire in 245/75R16 load C on a Jeep Liberty. They are quiet and have excellent snow, rain and dry traction on or off road. A true dual purpose tire that I would love to see in a 285 or 295/70R17 E.
 
Best AND Worst

I installed at set of 265 Silent Armours just less then two years ago when Denver was getting hammered with several blizzards, and quite simply these are the best tires I have used in snow, including compared to BFG AT's and Bridgestone Dueller Revo's I have run in the past.



That was the good news, the bad news is they are terrible pulling a bumper pull RV and feel like they have no control. It was even obvious to the wife and said she would not ride pulling the trailer with those tires again. The problem is they have fairly week sidewalls compared to other "E" rated tires. Instead of taking it on the shorts on the Wranglers, I bought a set of take off aluminum wheels with the Michelin stockers and use those in the summer months when towing, and switch back to the Wranglers in the winter for the snow traction. It is night and day difference between the tires towing. Also in fuel mileage, as I average 2-3 better MPG's with the Micheline's. I had two back to back 1500 mile trips to SD where the first one was with the Wranglers and the second trip with the Micheline's, and the all highway difference was over 3MPG.



I have since switched to a 5er and the difference is not quite as bad, but they still don't handle as well with a load as the Michelin's. I know of at least two others who bought this tires and actually returned them when they experience how they handled and how much the sidewalls flex on them. If you are empty most the time and are looking for snow traction they are great.
 
My friend went from "D" rated 285-70-17 BFG MT's to "E" rated 285-75-17 Toyo At's and lost the horrible tailwag he had. He carries a 1,000# Callen short cabover on it. There is a difference besides weight rating.
 
I think alot has to do with tread style & how new the tire is.

It's pretty weird but I pulled off a C rated A/T style tire I was running at 50 psi and went to the ever popular E Toyo M/T and right away noticed lots of tail wag with our TT, running more pressure helped some but it was pretty scarry actually.



The trouble either reduced with time on the tire or I started to get use to the feel or a little of both.
 
I hear good and bad!! I thought I would!! I guess I am curious,should I stay with a 265 ? Is this just a notion of wanting a bigger tire and a safety risk? I also thought about Firestone Transforce AT, any thoughts? I have a set of those on my company truck(05 2500 HD Chevy). They are doing good so far? I don't pull a heavy trailer often, but I want the truck to handle it when I do. I hate my stock Michelin's, they are horrible on everything but dry pavement!! I don't have a problem spending the long dollar if I am getting a better tire. Any thoughts:confused:
 
I was looking for a new set for my jeep... . 245/65/17 and the Goodyear Fortera Triple Tread... . on the Goodyear web sight, this is actually a better performing longer lasting tire and a couple of bucks less... . plus its rated a 10 on ice and snow over the Silent Armor's rating... . but I don't know if its available to fit your truck...

I finally decided on some Michelin's based on availability and their rating... and will get them before winter sets in...
 
I think all new tires produce some tire squirm when brand new. After a few thousand miles they get scuffed up some and grab a little better. I'm running the Toyo AT's and they're like rocks@65psi. Zero tail wag with my load. The Carli Airbags and Lorenz setup helps heaps too!
 
I have not really noticed any sway while pulling the company bobcat around. I chose to use the D load range for a nicer ride with the lower psi. Picked up a nail and the tire got under 15 psi before it before the sidewall started to bulge to bad. no sidewall damage driving it home at that psi either.
 
i have them, and really like them, Ys the side walls flex a little to much. but my ride and comfort went way up!! Here in tx we have thoes damn turtles (reflectors that are 4. 5 tall and round)

and with the stock tires i got air off of them. Now its a small thud. I love them!! They seem to hold gravel and then thow it when going about 15 mph.



I carry a least 1200 in bed and pull a 6K trailer with heavy tounge.
 
I am now thinking hard about not getting these!! I kind of like the rough ride. If I wanted a soft ride I would have got a 1500!! So whats the answer, BFG, Firestone, Toyo (Don't know if I could have something with that name on my truck) Cooper? I have looked at tires for a wile now and I am ready, just don't want to make a $1000 dollar mistake:confused:
 
I replaced my factory tires with 285/70 Michelin LTX AT-2s. They are a nice tire. I ended up paying $1000 at Sears for the set after rebate.

Michelin LTX A/T2 are a great handling, QUIET tire, that also hold traction well in snow and rain. 265/70 if you want a Load range E (that's what I did) or get the 285/75 in a D,if you want larger tires. Do a TDR search for them, people seem to like them.
 
I read a posting on another forum somewhere where someone pointed out that while the Silent Armors are getting rave reviews, they do not have the total mileage on them as your other tire choices do. If you did check out the link in my last posting, you will see that total miles for customers rating on the BFG's and others was at least a magnitude higher than they were for the Silent Armors because they are newer tires. I think this is a pretty fair assessment. So if you are having doubts about going with the newer Silent Armors, then for your own peace of mind you should stick with a tried and proven tire. As for which one you should get, again opinions are like noses and everybody has one. For my $0. 02 worth, I've run the BFG's for 15 years. I don't tow or haul really heavy loads that often, but I can attest to the fact that they are one tough tire. The first set I had, I slammed a curb with the left front one night and I mean hit it hard. The tires had 50K on them and the one I hit the curb with had a 5 inch gash in the side wall that you could pull back and see the cords. That tire did not loose 1 single lb of air. The biggest complaint that I've seen about the BFG's is that they tend to lose traction as they wear. My thought on that is that if you have a 4x4, what do you think it's for? :D As for me, I'm still seriously considering trying a set of the Silent Armors.
 
I guess I am going to pull the trigger and get the Goodyears:D I am going to get them Saturday. Going to go with 285's :eek: I will post pic and opinion after a few mile. Thanks for all the helpOo.
 
I had Wrangler SA's on my '05 for about 10k miles. I'm in construction and spend a lot of time in the gravel. I had 2 different tires plugged on 3 separate ocasions, due to gravel. I can't afford to lose that kind of time for $250 in tire savings. I'm back to BFG's and love 'em.
