almost everyone didn't like coopers (or rather their house brand) like I said I've had Cooper Discoverer H/T's with NO problems and 80k+ miles per set.

There used to be a TDR member around here that had excellent luck with the Highway Tread Coopers.....Truckie I think was his forum user name. I think that most of the complaints I've heard have been with the AT versions.

Oh, and on a side note, half worn BFG's, a plow and spreader, and a steep driveway covered in ice don't mix. Just don't ask me how I figured it out today.......:(

Discount Tire, Falken Rocky Mtn ATS.

Cerb I notice you recomend these quite a bit. I think I read somewhere where Falken is owned by Dunlop Tire, which I've never ran either. What size do you run? Unfortunately like most other manufacturers they have a limited selection in 17" tire sizes. Not an issue if you run OEM size but it would be nice to see more choices in 285/75

I am running the 295/70/17, a 33" tire. Any taller than that with the 3.73's messes up my towing and the sidewalls are too tall.

They have the normal sizes but not the tall narrow ones like Toyo. Maybe problems with seciton width and sidewal height they don't like?

According to their site, Falken is part of Ohtsu Tire.

Interesting...I wasnt aware Ohtsu made automotive tires. I know they are pretty big in the motorcycle/dirt bike/atv world, primarily as OEM tires.

Allow me to interject...

We are an Ohtsu dealer and here is the poop....

Sumitomo is the parent company.

Falken is owned by Sumitomo and have been offering light vehicle tires for some time.

Ohtsu is owned by Sumitomo as well and had been the heavy vehicle offering.

Now Sumitomo has decided that Falken is a more Americanized name and will be changing many of the Ohtsu offerings over to the Falken name.

You heard it here first........:D

Mike.

There it is in a nutshell. The Falken brand to this point has been performance tires but sounds like it will be getting more stuff.

Was leaning on a mounted display tire a minute ago, lo and behold it is a Falken...they are already changing the name over.

My 2 cents;;;

BFG All Terrains - great tire for off road and mixed snow, wear is uneven, and hard to keep balanced, have run them on a number of diesel trucks.

GY Silent Armor - same experience with poor wear

BFG Mud Terrains - Old Tread style, on 1997 in sig wear was great, some noise, awesome traction

Nitto Tera Grapplers - currently on 06 in sig - 20K miles with good wear, even wear. Good in light snow and light off road - pulling 13K of gooseneck trailer out of grass fields covered in 2" snow - no issues. Quiet and no need to rebalance - will be going with Nitto Tera Grapplers again.

Firestone Steeltex AT - good all around tire, but tread separation issues caused me to replace.

Michelin M&S - great tread wear, quiet - however on wet grass and light mud not great traction. Cost is higher, but if you run high miles, cost over time is reasonable.

Good Luck

Luke

I got a set of Cooper AT3's and so far they have been wearing well. Work great in the snow we have had. I plow my driveway and parking area behind our barn and have excellent traction on ice and snow. They are quiet on the highway.
I guess time will tell.

I put on a set of Cooper ATP's about 6 months ago and they have been great. Stepped up the size to a 285, kept the stock rims. No significant change in milage but I haven't really done a controlled test. Low noise especially considering how aggressive they are, handle well on the road, good in mud, good in snow, tow very well. I'm very happy. We'll see how well they last, I only have 10k on them & they still look new. These have been a huge improvement over my stock Michelin A/S's that were absolutely horrible in mud & snow.

Bumping this back to the top. any new advise on tires to use or stay away from? Time for a new set, may move to 18" rims, just looking for options.

I have the ProComp A/T from 4wheelParts. Mine are 37", but they have been a great tire. They have a 60k tread warranty. I've probably got about 30k on them and still plenty of tread left. They are also "E" rated, which was a plus. Im very happy with them.

I've been running Toyo tires since 2005. Easy to balance, thick 3-ply sidewalls and relatively quiet. I'm at 8600# with the constant 1800# camper load and feel confident with these tires. In all these years it's only taken 3.5 ozs to balance. Some needed zero.

I plan to get the stock size and will not get anything but a 10 ply. I stopped at the tire store around the corner from my house to order BFG All Terrains yesterday. They asked me to rethink it. They said they have never had luck with them. This is a small, vey small store where the owner and one other person are the only people there. They suggested Mastercraft Courser C/T's. They said they are a heavy tire that will hold up. They run them on a fleet of F350 diesels that plow in our area. Any experience with these? Look more aggressive than I had in mind. Snow traction? They are much cheaper then The BFG I planned to get. I need to buy tires this week do to a long trip planned this coming weekend pulling a trailer in the snow.

I had a set of the BFG At's and they eventually got separated belts in them causing a front end bounce at low speed and vibration at higher speeds.

I have always liked the build quality and handling of my Toyo Open Country AT2 285/75/17E tires but that being said, I am BARELY getting 20k out of this last set even with proper rotation schedule. AT 48psi for proper load, they are wearing evenly but FAST.

I realize that a high horsepower, 4 ton vehicle will eat tires, but 20k on a set of $1200 install tires is NOT ok by me.

NOT sure what I am going to do. I MAY go back to my 19.5 wheels with Toy M608Z commercial tires or I might try the Cooper AT3 which I now run on my smaller Toyota ranch truck and also on the Jeep Liberty CRD. So far, I am VERY impressed with the handling and balance and wear of the Cooper AT3, but of course only time and miles will tell how they would wear on the bigger beast!!! But at this point in time, its GOT to be better then the Toyo AT2 that the truck has been wearing out way too fast. YMMV !!!

seafish,
That's my problem too, I've run BFGs for years with 30k-50k on them with proper air and rotating but the last batch only 10k on 2 of them and just wearing too fast for the price, looking to switch but looking for options. I know some have had bad experiences with BFG but I've been fortunate I guess. Just don't want to drop good money on bad tires.

well ,my last set of Cooper AT3's went 80k miles and the current set is at 108k miles. '04.5 QCLB 4x4. Have the toe-in set to 1/8" toe-in. No more, no less. "within spec" isn't good enough either. Camber on my truck is 1/8*pos. both sides. I won't buy anything else. Granted I'll be ready for new tires come spring but these STILL had enough tread to get me through the winter..so far. :)
