Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) New truck or New Interior?

I am teetering on taking advantage of the great deals on the '08 Ram's at the dealer or upgrade my '01 interior. I was thinking of pulling out the seats and carpeting and then installing some soundproofing under the carpet and recover the cloth seats with new leather covers and wanted to see what sort of feedback any one has on what they did or the manufacturer of the seat covers that they chose.

The only thing I miss about my '99 is the softer seats. If you want to go to a 3rd. gen. I can only say that thus far my '07 5. 9 has not been back to the dealer. Driver fatigue is greatly improved.

I like your plans for the inside of your truck and you have done quite a bit to the one you already have. Do you want to have a truck payment again?

You are right, when I look at what I have done to the performance of the truck I think I amy bypass a new one and just vacuum out the dog hair and put some fresh carpet in there along with new seat covers, just need some feedback on seat covers and what the guys here like or what they have done.

Although, it is tough as a local dealer is selling a brand new '08 42k cummins for 27k out the door!

I pulled all the interior from mine and installed new insulation everywhere with new carpet. PITA and still sounds like a 12 valve!!!

I am in the process of creating a new interior in my truck. The carpet will be a tad darker, seats will get redone and something different for the headliner. For sound deadening and insulation I am going to use Luxury Liner, I looked into Dynamat but the price is way too high for my budget. Carpet and headliner are coming from stock interiors. I was on the fence as far as getting a new truck and decided to redo mine instead. I like not having a payment and there really is nothing with my truck and as long as I can get parts for it I intend on keeping it. If I were to trade up it would not be new I would look for a pre emission truck first.

I am now set on throwing a few hhundred bucks at sound proofing the cab and see what happens, I found this on the Second Skin product and this guy used the products for his Hionda and really liked it, now I just have to measure how much I am going to use.....

I didn't do a lot of research before i did the job. I got the insulation blankets from Geno's and cut to fit. Fitting the new pre-formed carpet was more work than should have been. Cutting the holes for the mounting bolts, seats, belts, etc. , takes a little patience.

Where did you get your carpet? The last Mopar carpet I did was a perfect fit and required no cutting at all.

On my 1973 Ford conversion, I used a product called Quiet Car. It comes in a liquid form that you can either spray on or brush on. I chose brushing because I didn't want to purchase an extra tool (spray gun) that I doubt I'd use again for quite some time.



Their web site is awesome, and has videos of how the product actually ABSORBS the sound, not just mask it like expensive Dynamat. I brushed FOUR coats on (about 1/4" thick) on the inside cab floor, firewall, back of cab and fuel tank behind seat. Same for the inside door skin.



I can say that it's not really any louder than a standard 24 valve Ram truck. I do want to put it on the inside of my hood this winter when I get a chance.



I purchased 3 gallons and used almost all of it for what I did. I believe in it and would highly suggest it to anyone who wants to do what you're doing.

When I do mine I will be going with Silent running, it's similar to the quiet car, but seems to be more effective according to my trial tests.

Definitely keep your truck, for the amount of a new payment you can make it better than a new one in all respects.

Bite the bullet, go for the new truck. There's a world of improvements on the 3rd gen truck.

Yeah Grizzly, I hear you. This past weekend I was towing my 5er up a nice grade heading to the snow and she heated up to near 240, something I have never experienced before so it looks like this weekend its time to change the fan clutch and clean the radiator. I am afraid she is getting to the age where I will have to start fixing little things that go wrong here and there, also this morning my driver window switch quit working, sure would be nice to have that warranty.

It can be a pain in the rear customizing our trucks with aftermarket repairs and upgrades... But do you really want to be bound to monthly payments? I figure that I can take my time to buy the toys I want as the paychecks allow, versues the bank mandating payments. Plus with the right parts she will be better than new, and you won't have to deal with any of the new hassles the new truck will have. Just because it is new doesn't mean trouble free. I enjoy a the new cars and trucks... But I would still rather have a customized and updated old muscle car than a new electronic, emissioned, depreciating car that the guy next door also owns a copy of.

I love the old cars too, have a 69 Mustang Convertible that just had a fresh paint job along with new engine and top so I am well aware of the fixing cars part by part. I did just find this lead sound shield and it's free shipping over 99 bucks!

Maybe I will rip out the interior and put in the lead and a new carpet and seat covers and see how that works, Man, I have never been on the fence so much since I was deciding between going home with this hot stripper or going home to my ex-girlfriend who would never have known.....

I installed Dynomat Extreme in the entire interior of my 02, including in the roof. I don't see a huge difference in sound reduction, but I do see better cooling w/ the AC and better heating. I have 600 watt amp in mine and the sound is way better.



As for buying a new truck or keeping the one you have... I think the 2nd Gen is the coolest looking and sounding over 1st and 3rd Gen. You just can't beat that old Kenworth look of the 2nd Gen. And mine has crazy torque on the low end w/ TST PM3 Adjustable stacked on Edge EZ. It still pulls my 17K lb 5er real good too.
