Remind me again that all this work will be worth it in the end, because right now this truck looks like SH!^! Today I sanded the entire passenger side rocker to bare metal & coated with Picklex. Then I removed the hood, cowl cover, rad support & drivers side doors. I removed all the sill plates, weatherstripping & got the drivers side jamb ready to sand tomorrow. The truck looks like a parts truck now.

WELL, I'm sure you priced a "professional" paint job similar to what you're doing - probably what motivated you to do your own - but I'd bet one done as thoroughly as what you are doing would run about 7 grand or better, out the door.

Actually, the bodyshop wanted $7800 to put a new doorskin on, replace the roof & repaint the same color, no jambs. It was $10,880 to do jambs & change color. I did not want them cutting the roof off, it wasn't that bad. I fixed the roof & as you can see in the pic, it didn't take much mud to straighten it out. I know I'm saving money & I feel that I'm doing the job right, but I just hate seeing it this torn down. I'm not intimidated though, I'll get it shipshape by pulling season.

Today I sanded the drivers doorjamb, sanded rocker to bare metal then coated with Picklex, Cut the weatherstripping out of front window, replaced drivers side door hinges [that was fun], then wire wheeled the outside of the passenger frame rail.

Finally started the fun stuff! Shot the cab/front end in epoxy primer, then high build urethane. The roof looks nice & straight.

You should think about shaving the antenna and tailgate handle. My tailgate is perfect now that I have the handle and that plastic junk off of it.

That does look nice. I will be taking the plastic off the tailgate, not sure about the handle though.

How does one go about removing the handle and then gaining access when one has a shell on it? Thanks in advance. Jim

The handle is basically relocated to the inside of the tailgate using the orginal handle. Most shells require that you lift it to open the tailgate anyway, look at as tailgate theft deterrent. I can post a picture of the inside of my tailgate tomorrow. This is the kit I used, not real sure how they filled the hole left by the tailgate though.

Something to think about while you have it all apart. I really like not having that ugly antenna on the fender. I have the antenna laying under the hood next to the fender behind the battery now. I like the color and as always pictures will do it no justice compared to seeing it upclose.

Thanks. Today I blocked out the roof & saw a few spots that wouldn't come out. I sprayed 3 more coats of 282 High build surfacer on & I'll be blocking the roof again. I'll get pics up after I'm done with the roof.

Here is a shot of the inside of my tailgate. You can see the outline of the relocation kit which allows you to use the original handle. Not sure why the plate is so big but my body guy said it was very easy to use and a good quality kit.

I use a Finishline HVLP for base 1. 3 nozzle, Sharp Cobalt HVLP for clear 1. 5 nozzle, NAPA Evercraft primer gun..... because its cheap & boy does it buildup the primer. I hook these to a Sharpe water filter/regulator.
