I have a 1997 2500 with a nv4500 stuck in 5th gear. I went to stop for a red light, and it wont come out of 5th. I pulled the shifter and the 5th, reverse shift rail is in the 5th gear position. You can push the shifter rail forward about 60% of the way, it will then bind up and go back to the 5th gear postion. You can start it, and load the clutch and it will pull the rpm down , so I dont think it spun the nut off. Anybody seen this before?

I had my Mule get stuck in 5th when I first go it. Stopped for a red light. I don't remember the exact cause but I let up on the clutch pedal a little and pulled it out of 5th at the same time (enough that it started going forward). Never did it again ( I don't bring it to a full stop in 5th any more).

Yes, transmission number 3 had the fifth gear synchro self destruct and it was locked into fifth gear just like you describe.

One of my 99's does this on a regular basis. It locks in 5th or more often reverse, while the shifter feels like it's in neutral. If this what you are experiencing, I find that taking the load off of the transmission and pushing in the clutch pedal makes the shift rail slide back easily. Not sure why this happens. Hope this helps.

One of the writers for the magazine had it happen, it was a few issues ago. IIRC he had tack welded the nut to the shaft after having it back off. The nut broke and the debris was jammed in there.

Am having the same problem with my nv4500. Fresh rebuild on transmission but has gotten stuck in 5th 3 times now. it happens when at highway speed and then try to downshift to 4th... no go... its stuck and no amount of clutch pressure or manipulating the shift handle resolves it. the only solution is to pull the shifter and replace it. When I do this the shift plates look like ther're in neutral so I've rebolted the shifter back and it works fine... until it happens again (under the same conditions). Could a lube change or addition of some additive help? Don't really want to tear it apart again so anybody have any suggestions?

I'm guessing you did the rebuild? Did you use Syntorq or equivalent oil?

A friend and I did the rebuild and we did use castrol syntorq 75w85. The transmission operated fine for about 3000k miles but now seems to have the trouble with 5th. Am thinking about amsoil 75w90 GL4 and see if that makes a difference. Anybody run amsoil in their NV4500?

I had this happen. I took the shift tower off and the sliders were still in fifth and the bottom of the shifter sliped into nutral. I slid the fifth and reverse slider back to nutral and put the tower back on. It then was ok but I did not put it into fifth gear again. Since it was under warrentee it was replaced.
