Three years ago we visited some friends in a remote part of Alaska. They run a Bed and Breakfast, a workshop and a few other buildings, which are headed with heating oil. He fills his Dodge diesel from the storage tank on the property. I asked him if he's not worried about getting caught with the dye in the heating oil. He said that they don't put dye in heating oil in Alaska.



Someone in Alaska, is that true?

I've been reading this thread also and agree with Harvey's point



some things I might mention that I've noted in my travels, not all truck stops have dyed diesel, at least in Kansas, Okla. and Texas, one reason why is most refer's don't burn enough diesel to make it worthwhile for a truck stop to warrant a tank for dyed diesel only



the price difference between dyed and non-dyed diesel varies State by State. it is a computation of Fed. highway fuel tax and State highway fuel tax,



in Kansas that spread is $0. 50, in Okla. I think it's about $0. 42, don't know for sure what it is in Tx. but I think it's less than that, in summary that spread will change State to State



I have a fuel tank toolbox combo in the bed of my truck, when in Kansas I'll get about 45 gal. (what my tank safely holds considering expansion) and use it in my tractor and for burning brush



depending on where you are located an d the refineries in the areas some of the dyed diesel is not ULSD, it not being ULSD is in part the attraction in some areas for running it



I don't know for sure but I have heard/read that it takes approx. 8 tanks of fuel in our trucks to get all of the dye residue out of the truck's system



if I was in the middle or nowhere and in a jam I'd put red fuel out of my tank into my truck, I would not buy red fuel to put in my truck, I have enough problems without getting fined trying to save $0. 15 to $0. 50 per galllon

While this is a SLIGHT thread drift, for those who have those bullet kero heaters, you can burn the #1 diesel in them. I burn it in my reddy heater without any problems.





As has been said, off road diesel is the same as ULSD just has the red dye to identify it. I know of several people who run it all the time in their 2006/07 trucks. I also know several of them HAVE gotten stopped in checks and fined big-time. A couple years ago the fine was only $500, it was low at that time to give everyone a break and let them know it's on-road use would not be tollerated any longer, today the fine is up to the DOT max amount of $2,500. I'd reallythink twice about using it on-road,not worth getting caught, and I do think we will see more and more DOT checkpoints specifically for checking our trucks. Last year in Texas there were several people reporting being 'dipped' and 'fined' and the DOT was on some small back roads. The horse/rodeo people all have been complaining about this happening at their events as well.

I use ULSD road fuel in my heater with no problems. I just hooked up a guage to set air preasure and adjusted it to 5. 25 PSI, stock was just 4. 5 PSI. It works perfect.

Here in MD it's even less. Right now on my route to work, the price for Dyed is only $0. 20 less at the BP and $0. 25 less at the Shell.

It's usually around . 50- . 60 a gal here in NJ depending on who's digging the customers at the particular time.

Red dyed fuel is not approved for any school bus... whoever thought they could use it was incorrect... they may have some tax exempt status based on state law and claim a rebate on taxes... but they still can't have their vehicles use this fuel...

laidlaw was the school bus company that used reddye fuel I dropped many thousands of gallons of it at their Montclair,San Bernardino, Riverside, Hesperia yards so I do know first hand that they did use it in their buss fleet. The problem was they used it in their maint. trucks.

Then again,I wouldn't even know where to buy it. I know it can be delivered to your home. The local gas/diesel stations don't carry it at the pumps,at least in the Mat Su Valley-Anchorage areas. I wouldn't even know the price difference. When I worked construction and ran heavy equipment and drove big rigs all over the state from Prudhoe Bay to Adak island,we didn't have off road only fuel. I retired in '97,so things may have changed since then. (I doubt things have changed any) Not to talk politics,when Sarah was the Governor,she had the state fuel taxes suspended because of the unreasonably high fuel prices. (I saw $8. 00 a gallon advertised in one village for heating oil!) Now that Sarah quit as the Gov,our state taxes are back. All though there is again talk of tax relief again because of the continued RAPE at the fuel pumps. You would think that since we pump our own oil,and also refine the fuel,we would have some of the lowest fuel prices in the Nation. The state investigator said there was no price fixing going on with the oil companies. I have to raise the #ad

It is about 50 cents per gallon tax here in Maine. I drove tankers for a few years and serviced gas stations as well as filled our bulk tanks for the heating oil and kerosene deliveries.



Anytime I ran heating oil and then switched to automotive fuel, I always had to run a load of gasoline to wash out the pocket that I would later run on-road diesel in.



You aren't only risking fines from DOT, it is also plain and simple Tax Evasion. That can easily hit $10,000.



As far as searching a private vehicle without probable cause... . I think you could beat that one, but it would cost you the $$ for a sharp attorney. As far as comparing that to Law enforcement searching a big rig???? No comparison. Everyone of us that drive big rigs know that we give up all of our rights when we park our happy ***** in the seat!



I don't run non-taxed diesel in my truck, but at times when we are getting screwed on the pricing ($5. 00/gallon!) I have really though about it. Here is what stops me...



A few years back, a young girl in a Nissan Maxima, ran a stop sign coming from a side street. Torpedoed my poor truck just behind the cab. $11,000 damage, but no damage to the frame. She even ruptured my fuel tank! Guess what would have happened if Johnny Law saw heating oil or Off-road Diesel on the ground? It only takes once and all your savings over the years... goes up in fumes!
