Ford 6.0 info

Why was the 5. 9 Cummins the "standard engine option" and 6. 0 "optional equipment" on the F-650 and F-750??? Simply because it's the best!! And FYI, the I-6 Cummins engine fits just fine in any Ford pickup. Just take a look at fordcummins.com - Increase Horsepower with Ford Cummins Diesel conversion kits and see how nice it fits.
I think that pickup manufacturers should be the same as class 8 trucks in that you can have anything you want.
ie... Most Freightliner (Chrysler) trucks are powered by Detroit engines (GM)
I think it would be nice to be able to spec a truck just how you want it to be based on customer choice and then nobody would have a reason to complain about it.
That said, I hope Ford does well with the new engine and people get what they pay for. I have owned vehicles from all of the American manufactures and each one has its quirks and benefits...
I am a "die hard" Cummins fan, love the comfort and smooth ride of the early 90's Chevy, and love the looks of the 94-97 Ford... Too bad I can't have all of it in one package:{

Again with misinformation on the internet. Freightliner is owned by Daimler, who has NO assocation with the Chrysler Corporation WHATSOEVER anymore. At one time, Daimler was in partnership (actually it was a partnership in name only--Daimler owned Chrysler for lack of a better way to say it) with Chrysler Corporation, but the company Detroit Diesel was a joint venture between Roger Penske (Penske Automotive Group) and General Motors to consolidate what once was known as Detroit Diesel Allison Division of General Motors.

In October 2000, Daimler purchased all assets of Detroit Diesel from General Motors, including the 48. 6% owned by Penske, and we all know what happened with the DaimlerChrysler 'partnership. '

Who wants to take the cab off to change an airfilter anyways:-laf My neighbor has had FORD replace both his 07 and 08 450's because of engine failure, He now has burned up a 09 but that 07cummins he has is still pulling him out of FORDs great let down

Do you have documentation in the form of SEC filings, news articles, etc to support this, or is it yet another hearsay internet rumor myth?

No I don't have any of this type of infornation. However, I believe it was so written in a past TDR mag back in 2003. Also, I read many of the online Auto News websites, and mentioned it there more than once. This was difinitely not hearsay, or a rumor. The Cummins stock, as I remember shot up in price because of it. I look at it this way, you don't have to believe me, but there are many people in this forum that know it is true, and I know it is true. So take it for what it is worth. It really isn't that important now anyway because it never was followed through. :)

Then it should be extremely simple to find proof and post a link to it.

I'll wait. Plenty of time.

I bet if he had a bought a 6. 0 Power Stroke he would have been saying the same thing about it! I have known so many people that wish they had not bought a Ford with that engine. Overall the Cummins/Dodge is a much better setup than the Ford, plus it is Major UGLY. Sometimes people like to find fault with something, just to have something to complain about. I would buy a GMC turck before buying a Ford, if I didn't have a choice to buy a Dodge. If Dodge had gone out of business you can bet that Ford would have been all over Cummins to get that engine in their Trucks! So tell your brother in law to stay with what he has, because it isn't going to get better with the Ford! I can just see your writing this again some day saying he wished he had kept the Dodge. :-laf
i bet i wont take that bet! i have seen some very high mileage 6. 0's that were well worked, not give their owners any issues. at the same time i can find more then a couple that nitpicked their owners so bad, they unloaded them. i have seen some duramax's and common rails do the same. . fact still remains, early 6. 0's were an especially problematic engine on average.

a little history and some facts for those who dont allready know them. in the early 80's, cummins went to Gm with it's soon to hit the market b series engine, looking for other customers. Gm declined cummins, due to allready havin developed it's own in house 6. 2 engine, which was scheduled to hit the lots that year. Next was ford, whom cummins allready had quite a relationship with on it's large trucks. Ford declined the b series engine, due to having allready signed up with international , and it's 6. 9 engine. The next stop was dodge, who really wasnt convinced a diesel was feasible in a pickup. Cummins actually had to design the engine into dodge trucks, and do a lot of the leg work to market their engine to these idiots. I call dodge an idiot because they were nearly extinct in the pickup market, and ford and gm were actually doing fairly well with their diesel sales allready. What did they have to loose? As for the v8 to inline 6 reasoning, folks have to remember the times. First inlines in medium trucks at this time was fairly uncommon, the market was still dominated by v8 gas engines, so there wasnt really a diesel available to pass down to the light trucks. fwiw; the international dt466 and the very rare duetz inline 6 gm used, were the only inline engines at the time in the segment. The medium v8 diesel's offered were better performers in most cases. Another issue was transmisson's and gearing during the early 80's. None of the big 3 had an od transmission for their 3/4 and one ton's, to accomidate the lower redline of the inline engine. dodges original answer to this was a 3. 07 axle ratio, and it was still slower then ford or gm's with the much better pulling 3. 55, 3. 73 ratio's. as for packaging, the 5. 9 fits rather well into just about any series ford or gm trucks. fact is, the 12v in my 99gmc fits better then any of the 2nd gen dodges i have had. .

no doubt... my old 89 model was a slug when you tried to run I-20..... but it WOULD run the same speed loaded with cattle or running empty!!. . I still see that old truck every great once awhile running sideways down the road... (POS big block gas frame will NOT hold a 12v cummins... even a VE 160 hp version!!!)

Before going to Isuzu, GM approached Cat about partnering up... . Cat was willing, but stipulated a 200K warranty on the entire running gear, not just the engine, GM declined!.

yea i sold my 89 model to a friend up in jefferson 2 years back. it was a very clean truck, with low mileage. it's one of the few truck's i owned that lived the easy life, yet the frontend and transmission still didnt hold up. the 90 model i have at least worked for awhile, nothing but the engine has held up on it though! I remember something being said about gm and cat teaming up when the 3116 hit the mediums. not my most favorite engine, but i sure would have liked to have seen that one under the hood of a 3500, or 3500hd truck, back in the 90's. Still would!

I've never heard this before. Why would Cat care about anything besides the engine? And why would they rather abandon any business with GM over what GM offers for a warranty? Can you cite an article about this?

Ryan

Memory serves me correct, gm approached cat about developing an engine, a year or so before the 3116 debuted in the mediums. Ford 6. 9 and even more so the 7. 3 sales were eating gm 6. 2 sales for lunch. Factor dodge getting the 5. 9 from cummins , and filling all their orders for the engine in 89', i suspect gm was seeing the light about the shortcoming's of the 6. 2 engines. Considering weak sales as, well as emission laws of the early 90's, gm needed to do something. As i remember gm wanted something quick, but cat wanted time to develope, test and back with a warranty, likely gm didnt care much for the cat price tag either. All this makes me wonder if the 3116 was even being considered for the light truck platform, since it hit the lot's around 90'. Also makes me wonder if gm wanted an engine that would fit under 1/2 ton trucks as well as the 3/4 and 1 tons, + have warranty coverage from cat.

ARGH!!!. . 3116. . thats almost as bad as saying 3208...

Last time I saw my old 89 model is was "crab-walking" down hwy. 59 in Jefferson...

yep, the 3116 get's mixed reviews everywhere you look. i hear some say that engine was not the easiest to work on, and reliability was marginal. my brother has one in a wrecker thats racked up a lot of miles, and has been failrly reliable. But it has allways been a slug, and he has to keep the heater pluged in when the temp gets below 40*. even with the intake heater bad, i would have suspected it to easily fire at 40* temps. what color is that 89 you had?

It was a red single cab D250 4x4... when I got rid of it, and when I saw it last, it still had the c-channel front bumper on it!!. . VERY useful bumper when travelling to the deer lease just north of Smithland at 4 AM!!!.

I think I got more kills on the way to the lease than I did when I got there!!!!. .

Yep, just about anywhere north of loop 390, and south of atlanta tx, is a great place to get ambushed by deer. Been that way for as many years as i can remember. As for your truck, i see it every now and then myself. If it's the same truck i see, it has a black front bumper, and older gent driveing it, and yes it's a little crooked running down the highway. When he has issue's with it, he gets them fixed at the repair shop out on 59. N . i pitty the poor fella for that!!

YEP!!. . thats her... I put the initial "hurt" on the frame rails in Kilgore hauling too big of a trailer loaded with WAY too many cows and being in too much of a hurry. Had the fuel turned up, and when it shifted, the drivers door seal let go and started leaking air... Got to the un-load spot for the cows, and the drivers door didn't want to open. . by the time I got rid of it years later, every crossmember under it was loose.

BUT, the old engine was still running strong. At 200K, I pulled the valve covers and checked the valve adjustment and pulled the nozzles for a clean and pop test... Other than that, 3 gallons of Rosmella and a filter was all it ever got.

Glad to hear its still on the road... Its GOT to have 500K or more on it by now. . it had 340K on it when I traded it off in 2001.

Just read a write up on the new Furd 6 speed transmission for the '11 Super Duty.

Seems like a pretty stout and handy piece of equipment. Supposedly they ran it under load, max and normal, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until it racked up 250,000 miles.

Looks rather impressive.

Thats an encourgaing bit of information. . was there any more info on the engine? I'm curious if they will de-tune the engine for the F450 and F550 C&C trucks?... I hope not. . it will be nice to be able to pass somebody without having to have a 2 nile down-hill run with a tail wind...

Not any more info on the engine that I've seen.

Another thing about the transmission... . double overdrive and a PTO.

I'll get the article and post more details later for the curious.

The trq shift was a fairly solid performer for ford, with a couple of glitches in it's early day's. Glad to see ford step up with the others in the their auto's, and the spec's are impressive. should mean better performance overall. Not happy to see them axe the manual option though. .
