How to sell an RV?

wheel torque

Maybe without any water in that 500 gallon tank!!

I weighed my truck yesterday at the dump it was 7180lbs empty with me and the dog in it. KLaubers rig was something like 9800 with the trailer attached. To be conservative, due to the truck being different years, etc etc. I figure the tongue weight has to be at least 2k the way he had it loaded at the time he scaled it.

Kenny,

I weighed it last summer empty but with toolbox and fuel tank (95 gals) fuel, it was 7800 lbs.

WHo knows how to find out the gear ratio on the rear end?

Thanks all.

Ken

jack up rear, turn driveshaft 1 rotation, count how many times tire goes around

3 1/2 times= 3. 50

3 3/4 = 3. 75

4= 4. 00

think you get the idea. it will not give you exact but as long as there are only 2 factory options you will be able to pick which one

9720lbs - 7800 = 1920lbs tongue weight... . I was off by 80 lbs. Not bad for 700 miles away on the other end of the internet:-laf

It's the other way around...

The driveshaft turns 3 1/2 times to one revolution of the wheel for a 3. 54 and four times for a 4. 10.

Armed with computers and a world wide brain we are invincible! But this does not explain why we don't have flying cars yet. I mean I was reading about them in the 60's... . !!!

Actually its the same, one drive shaft will turn tire 3 1/2 times or 3 1/2 tire turns will turn drive shaft 1 time. I only went with drive shaft because if it is a non posi unit turning the tire will result in the other tire turning in an opposite direction and the drive shaft not turning at all.

Try towing that truck down a steep winding mountain road and you will have a flying truck.....

Ken, with your truck's wheels pointed straight, drive up until your valve stem on your rear tire is straight down. Make a crayon mark on your driveshaft. Pull up (going exactly srtaight) exactly one one wheel revolution. If the driveshaft rotated four and one tenth turns, you have a 4. 10. If it rotated only 3 and 3/4 times, you have a 3. 73. 3 and just over a half, you would have a 3. 54. My old C60 Chevy's low ratio in its 2 speed rear end is an 8. 85, I believe. It takes nearly 9 turns of the shaft to turn the tires over once. Coupled with a 5 speed direct trans with lower ratios in the bottom gears and a 350 gas engine that is factory set up for low rpm torque, it has made other trucks look silly getting around in soft fields with a load. That is why the new 5 and 6 speed Ford, Allison, Chrysler, Aisin, are superior to our 48re trans for starting loads uphill. They have that lower first gear to get rolling. Since the 48re doesn't have it, it has to be helped with a 4. 10 rear end. Built transmission or not, for your load, especially in them thar hills, Texas Barlow is right: You need a 4:10 if you go auto in a Dodge. Mark

Hey Kenny, methinks you may be bass akwards!! Mark

You know if I actually wrote what I meant I wouldn't be. The scary part is that not only did I write it wrong twice I actually explained it too.....

Well, at least you got a good 'cuse!: Breathing all that "perlooted" Noo Yawk air, ya know?! Mark

The 03 dually has a 3. 73 rear. No sale. Just give the last 9 digits of any VIN to your local dealer parts dept and they will tell you whats what.

Also the SC Transport Police emailed me back and said I was fine running around SC without a DOT number or CDL license, but next year will be different.....

WHat about an 08 dually with manual and 3. 42 rear? Its a truck that just came in to the local dealer via trade-in from Ft. Worth, TX and has only 41K miles. It has ball hitch in the bed and a really awful trim package on it (skirts, roof spoiler, barbed wire striping ) I'm gonna drive it on Monday after they service it.

I would placard it as rolling time bomb  :-laf

The reason I asked this was because it would be considered a tanker (IIRC) since its 500 gallons and will have petroleum (waste) residue... I wasn't trying to be funny. So when/if the time comes, he could possibly need a Tank endorsement and HazMat endorsement on a CDL.

Under 1000 gallons

Its exempt cause the portable tank is under 1000 gallons. Petroleum impacted water is also exempt from Superfund regs or any haz waste regs.

Thanks for checking though!
