So I'm trying to buy this 2005 2500. In california to get a truck registered you have to get it smog. The problem is that he has an after market exshaust that has no cat. I don't think it will pass smog. Has anyone had to go thru a california smog test. Did they even look at the exshaust? What should I do?

It's the sellers responsibility to smog the vehicle before it's sold. If he's selling it "AS IS" then you can provide him the price for a new cat, and adjust the selling price accordingly.

JKreiss is right. The seller must smog the vehicle in order to transfer ownership in Ca. Cats are very expensive. If he won't restore the exhaust to stock, move on.

He said he would put a cat back on. Where does it say he has to smog it. It said I was suppposed to. If he puts the cat back on then the cost for me to smog it is not a big deal. What do you think?

In California it is the sellers responsibilty to provide smog. The smog cert is good for 90 days so anybody would be wise to smog before selling. If the vehicle fails after the transaction the seller is responsible for what ever it cost to pass

The seller is responsible for the Smog test in Cali, unless you are trading it in to a dealer. It is the law. So technically it would be the other persons responsibility.
It may not be worth it though... good luck.

Bob4X4 is right...
What else has this guy done to the truck???? I just sold my brothers 01. 5 Dodge diesel and he had to smog it in LA before I could sell it for him up here in the central coast. The smog guys have a book that tells them what each year is supposed to have. I just had to smog my '07, 5. 9 and the guy asked where was the DPF. I had to show him the engine family sticker to show it was a 5. 9 and not a 6. 7 AND the build date on the door of 12-'06.

Well sort of... actually the seller is responsible for it passing a smog test so if a buyer purchases a vehicle that won't smog they are legally due their purchase back. Typically a seller will provide the smog to prevent the hassle of returning the money if it doesn't pass.

I have a used 05 cat being sold as part of an exhaust system for $300 plus shipping. Call me at 530 554-4528, if you are interested.

I didn't comment when the original poster asked what members thought about this truck he wants to buy but his first post mentioned that the truck was modified. I don't remember what mods it has, probably a magic black box.

I would not buy a modified used truck under any circumstances but particularly not a CA truck I was going to try to register in CA.

My advice would be to walk away from this truck and keep looking. A modifed truck could very well have been abused. HPCR injectors will not stand up well to increased rail pressure which black boxes often cause and if the buyer could be facing one or more injector failures not to mention the risk of a melted piston. Even one injector is expensive not to mention all six.

With careful and patient searching it is possible to find a clean low mileage unmolested Dodge-Cummins owned or previously owned by an old guy who left it as the factory built it, serviced it properly, and drove it with care.
