2003 Dodge Ram 3500 5. 9 litre standard output auto transmission diesel, dies frequently. Is becoming more frequent, but so far Dodge shop can't find anything wrong. It is particularly bad when coming up to a freeway exit or stop light and take my foot off the throttle. It used to start right back up after dying, but now is getting harder to get started. Has an in-tank fuel pump, new in 2007. It has been doing this for over a year now, and started shortly after having my transmission rebuilt, with periods of up to a month or more when it doesn't die at all. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it but it's driving me nuts and I'm afraid one of these days it won't start after dying and leave me stranded. I will greatly appreciate any ideas you can give me.

Thank you.

Do you know if it sets any codes when it dies? Did the shop scan for any? Do you run any gauges? Fuel pressure? What is the mileage on the truck? APPS? FCA?

Mine done that same thing a few times. Changed out camshaft position sensor and hadn't done it since. But now mine would pop check engine light on occasionally before the engine stumble or die. Noticed it doing more like coming off interstate exit.

SO = Standard Output?... would this be one of the last 250HP VP44 trucks?

I'd start by looking for a pinched wire from the trans install. Then move on from there...

The very first CR trucks with the 47RE were 250HP, and also had the 10. 5" axle. I drove one of the first ones in November of 2002, before I ordered my present truck.

The 305HP was available with only the NV5600, until the 48RE became available in January of 2003.

Thank you for the suggestions. Shop did scan for codes. Put fuel pressure gauge on it and drove it for several days but it refused to fail during that time!
