Took out to run around and noticed it had a stumble at idle. Turned around to bring it home and it died. I've had this happen before and unfortunatly its been the vp44. Today I proceed to take the pump out and have it ready as a core when I go purchase anooother one. Come to find, the key on the vp44 was partly sheared. I'm assuming the pump is ok. Going to have it sent out to be tested. The pump gear appears to be damaged I'll post a picture to get opinions on it. My question is what cause the key to shear? This pump is two years old. I replaced it myself. Does anyone have a junk engine with a fuel pump gear or know where I can find one? View attachment 77179

View attachment 77180 They left of the keyway is rounded

It looks like possibly the VP44 tried to seize internally.

eBay has several drive gears listed right now. Search on the words "VP44" and "gear" and they'll pop up.

Please let us know what you find out.

Called East Coast Diesel about a gear. They have them laying around for cheap:) Im assuming from doing p-pump conversions. The pump spins and shoots fuel out of each port. Im going to take my chances put new gear and key in pump and try it out. The wasted labor is cheaper than a new pump so Im trying that first. In the mean time Im doing the dowel pin and resealing the front cover along with cleaning out the rad and intercooler.

Welp you guys were right. The pump locked up:( I put her back together today with the new gear and key she wont fire:( Looks like I'm ordering my third pump.

Those keys are specific to the calibration of the pump. You just can't replace the key with an off the shelf key, they are offset for timing (stamped number on the top). May want to take the pump to get it calibrated... unless the new key got sheared and the pump is not turning.

To me it looks like the last install the key did not get lined up in the groove correctly.

I know the keys are specific. Mine is an 036. The pump spins, dont feel any rough spots. Evidently siezed and caused the first key to shear.

Something chunky went through it. Those are tight tolerances in there. If the pump is still under warranty I'd try that route.

Back when the ULS diesel came out, I saw a large variety of pump failures ranging from every O-ring leaking to twisted shafts and a few snapped ones, but this is a first for a sheared keyway.

i hope you torqued the nut on the pump shaft on install the first time ? if it was tightened i never saw that happen n i blew seized 3 pumps on my 98 !!

Yep torqued the nut to spec I believe it was 125ftlbs or in that area. So I ordered a bd high performance pump. Hopefully they hold up better.
