Some of you are obviously members of a generation where nothing is ever your fault, it is always someone else's responsibility when something goes wrong.

Sometimes truth and reality are a bit hard to accept.

Each to his own, I guess.

Maybe the problem is the way you attack individuals when you assume the worse. Simply stated you lack decorum and maybe some of whatever generation you speak of are just are looking for answers or better understanding of a situation and not a beat down from you. You do not need to be top dog in every post. Kick back, relax and enjoy life and try to share some of your knowledge.

I absolutely hate ABS!!! I call it Anti-stop Braking System! #@$%!

The '11 'pooperduty' I drive for work is a real pain out here in the oilfield. The traction control kicks on all the time (even when you push the button on the dash to disable) It has left me stuck in the mud on a few occasions because it is constantly braking and de-rating power to keep traction when there's none to be had.

The stopping distance in mud and on ice is about 20x more than it should be. It doesn't matter how hard you push the peddle at all! The truck maintains the same speed for several car lengths before it even tries to stop it. I consider this to be very dangerous and I would surely be involved in an accident if I were to experience the same type conditions on a paved road with traffic.

Both first gen trucks I've had never applied any braking power to the rear wheels until they were bypassed and now I have actual control over how much braking force is applied and ONLY now am I confident in their stopping abilities :)

The only close calls I've ever had were with newer ABS equipped vehicles when the peddle refused to go down no matter how hard I pushed on it.

... ... ... ... ... . try to share some of your knowledge.

That's what I did. The problem here is some of you don't like my answer.

I am telling you it is operator error not ABS brake failure. The problem in this thread is the op wants to convince himself that it was the truck's fault. When anyone drives a truck through mud expecting the brakes to stop the truck and crashes causing damage estimated at $22,000 it is very likely the driver has operated the truck too fast for conditions. He was not creeping slowly through the mud. Neither ABS or ordinary brakes are going to stop a truck on mud because the tires do not have adequate traction.

COSMO did an excellent job in this thread of explaining how ABS works and what it is intended for. Others have contributed to the explanation.

ABS is intended for pavement. Anyone with 5 minutes experience on gravel knows it does not work well because it disengages the brakes when traction loss accurs. Thats as plain as I can state it.

unfortunatly some oems have not addressed the off road issues in their design or owners manual. Some vehicles do shut down the abs when 4 wd is engaged.

Mr. Barlow, you are not always right. You need to accept that. In addition, having dealt with a bully for 40+ years, I can categorically state that you are a bully. And I feel sorry for you.

How about this Mr. Barlow... . write an EXPERT article for TDR and/or the web explaining the "correct" way to drive a Dodge Ram in ALL situations, to include weather, fuel levels, tire wear, amount of dirt on the steering wheel, year, 12V, 24V, HPCR, 68RFE, 2500, 3500, cloth seats, leather inserts. vinyl, back seat up, back seat down, one tire at 64 psi, other three at 65psi, spare tire at 35 psi, one flashlight in the center console, 3 in the glovebox ... . etc.

I would find it very informative and enlightening to learn from someone who has all the answers such as yourself Mr. Barlow.

And like I said before, it is time for you to grow up and get over your father hatred and resentment of authority. I'm not your father and as far as I know, never knew your mother.

How old are you? Are you 21 yet?

COSMO, Bob 4x4, and others are explaining to you and the OP how ABS systems work and what they cannot do.

If you are old enough to drive and have a license you should understand that nothing, not ABS, magic carpets, or even conniving politicians can create traction in mud.

When someone drives through muddy ruts fast enough to run into trees and total his truck expecting ABS brakes to magically stop his truck he has made a serious error in judgement. That's driver error whether you like it or not.

So you don't like me or what I write. That's tough luck. I surely don't care.

This sums it up. Chevy has addressed this long ago (and maybe others). Dodge has always followed chevrolet in the technology department.

I'm not sure about this. It's not really magic to turn off ABS when the vehicle is put in 4wd. Some manufacturers have addressed this 2 decades ago. Dodge obviously has not, as the OP unfortunately found out from first hand experience. I think the lesson we can learn here, is that when modifying the Ram's suspension to perform offroad, one should also update the ABS system to be disabled in 4wd.

Harvey I will put this as simply as I can for you, If the brakes worked properly it would have been fine, I was not driving to fast for conditions and with all the replies yes it was the ABS AND YOU ARE WRONG! LIKE IT OR NOT SOMETIMES THINS DO NOT WORK AS THEY SHOULD! You were not there to see me stand on he brakes and the truck continue to roll into the trees, you have made your opinions painfully obvious ( which we know is your constitutional right because when someone politely asked you to keep your useless opionions to your self your go off like a 3 year old about your rights blah blah blah ) so I ask you politely to stop posting on this thread. ( I know you will lecture me about your rights to post and that it was my fault, I dont care you just make your self look bad )

Fox : Harvey is the only issue with this thread, don't lock the thread just delete his useless bantering and we will be ok, I agree this is ridiculous though. I think this thread has been informative to members about potential issues with ABS and off road use.

You are right.

Back to the topic.

I got a ticket and spent a fair amount of money I didn't have extra, because of some stupid engineering failure called ABS.

In the same type of situation without ABS, I could of stopped a trailer with a car on it.

I desribed the accident fully to the officer, and a witness said I was exactly right. The officer said to me, why didn't you just stop? I answered ABS brakes caused this. He said He sees it all the time.

BTW, I've been driving for 42 years with a drivers license, 4 years before that on the farm.

It is interesting that some want to deny the right of free speech to those whose opinion you don't like.

In America, where everyone has a right of free speech, you have the right to not read or not listen to the opinions you don't like but not to deprive the speaker of his right of free speech.

It is clear that both of you have had accidents that you would prefer to blame on ABS brake systems. I'm sorry about that but it doesn't change the facts.

The right to the freedom of speech is perhaps the greatest freedom we have. Without that one freedom, we have no freedom at all. Harvey, your input is accepted!

By the same token, the original poster firmly attains that the inability to stop his truck in a reasonable manner under control was due solely to faulty operations of the ABS system. Since you were not there, and he was, I think he may have the upper hand. This was not his first time driving offroad. He is not a novice city slicker whose penny loafers slipped off the brake pedal while trying to try out his 4wd for the first time.

The point is that Dodge has an antiquated, sub-par, out-dated, behind-the-times ABS system that happens to work okay for most users under nice circumstances. The OP was simply bringing this to light for the benefit of others, who like him, may have been unaware of the lack-luster design of the braking system in certain situations.

It is clear that you would prefer not to blame the ABS brake system. I'm sorry about that, but it doesn't change the facts!

Oh, I hope you know, all is in good humor from my end, and I always enjoy what you post... whether it's right or not! :)

Have a great 4th!

Aaron props to you for bringing up this discussion

Knowing full well how much heat you would take

If this thread saves 1 truck... ... mission acomplished!!

Something that should be made clear is

That your tires were not stopped and slipping on the

Mud but that your tires were not being stopped from

Turning

Harvey, do you think , where ever you are, that you can know even a little bit about my accident and what caused it?

Can you tell me when the next one will ocure?

You have driven a lot of miles too, and you know when the brake system is working correctly or not.

Here was my info.

Driving 30 mph, about 3-4 lengths behind a suv. I can see ahead, as I drive that way as much as possibe, and cars are turning into a MacDonalds ahead of me. I lift the throttle. I notice along line and realize that we need to stop.

I notice the suv infront of me on the cell phone so I apply the brakes. Two cars up, there are 5 in front of me, one makes a panic stop, again because of the @#%$@# cell phones!

I'm now pushing hard to get it shut down. All from a big 30 mph!!!

Brake peddle starts to chatter and it just rolls into the suv in front of me and bump.

I could of had my 2500 and trailer with my tractor on it and stopped very short of all this. I know it will stop, from 30 mph, in 60 feet.

So, why are you saying it wasn't as I described? (with ABS) Were you there and witnessed it? An off duty cop was on the sidewalk walking toward me and was a witness. He even said it happened the same way. As a ABS accident, and that there was nothing done wrong by me!!!! I did swerve, but he was on the sidewalk and I had to hit the suv or him and his daughter.

You look very silly with your possition on this, so back off and let it go.

Fox,

Don't ever make the mistake of telling me what to do or not to do.

Like I wrote above, if you don't like my opinions, don't read them.

You will never silence me or tell me when or what to write.

HAAAA HAAAAAAAAAAAAA OK!!!!!!

How will I know your opinion if I don'r read what you wrote!!! Haaaa. Haaaa.

Never mind.

I'm done.
